I think the sum of things we do badly is greater than the sum of the things we do well. which negates the ‘great’. it’s not even good britain.

Portugal's trade agreements will be negotiated by the EU, and UK is unlikely to go to war with Spain in the foreseeable future, so the old alliance is just a historical curiosity.

Spain was an ally of Nazi Germany in the last war, Franco would have attacked Britain if he believed that Hitler had the slightest chance of winning the war.
Spain has only been a democracy for a relatively short time, it had been a democracy when Franco overthrew it, the same thing could happen again.

That's actually not true.

It is true, Franco would never have won the civil war without German and Italian help.
Who bombed Guernica? Franco was shrewd enough to know the German victory in WW2 wasn't guaranteed which is why he didn't join Germany in attacking the Allies.
Franco waited on the sidelines to see who was going win, if the Nazis appeared to be winning there is no doubt he would have joined the Nazis in attacking Britain.
