Grenfell Tower

Cancelled in my area too, but no vote for a mayor? seems a bit odd.

and people said it would be trump who would destroy democracy.

I'm just trying to find out more info specific to my area as I've not been looking at local news sources and clearly had my head up my behind. I don't appreciate having my right to vote messed with. This is the stuff of a banana republic.

No vote. No democracy.

There are strong complaints in my area about the lack of a referendum on this.

All other parties and independents are saying the same thing, it's no good.

IMO it would be stupid to leave it there, if not already the usable flats will fill up with squatters who have nowhere else to live.
If not then I'm sure theurban explorers will try and getin (if not already).

At present it serves no purpose beyond reminding people what happened, knock itvdown and build something new there instead, put a memorial somewhere to remind those that need to be reminded about it.

The media and pollytickians will play both sides of this and wind everyone up about it.

The best idea i've heard for the site is to turn it into a memorial garden, similar to the site of the Twin Towers in NYC. Just don't allow the Council to be put in charge of the design - i am available for consultation.

You can’t elect a mayor for a non existent authority. Consultation and transitional arrangements have to be sorted first. Previous reorganisations have taken years, its a credit to Ange that she’s moving so fast, possibly too fast. Re form will have plenty of time to prepare a short list of candidates, they are rumoured to have state of the art vetting procedures.

The best idea is to rebuild with sprinklers using money from the insurance of the organisations that were criminally negligent in the construction and specification of the cladding. The 200 million cost of the inquiry might have been a saving.

A bit late for sprinklers, i'd say...and an inconvenient nuisance for good folk walking through the garden, too.

sounds expensive, no doubt council tax will rise for all the extra value waste.

who has been found "criminally negligent"?

It is inconceivable there won't be serious criminal charges brought given the inquiry findings of dishonesty, and the making of false and misleading statements. But with or without charges, and in the light of the inquiry findings, what happened is still criminal. Hopefully the police wont be bamboozled by highly paid lawyers into the trap of thinking no one is liable amidst the web of buck passing.

Taxes are rising anyway, for well rehearsed reasons: better the money goes to more efficiently run services than it being invested pocketed by the super rich.
