.........HUNDREDS of thousands of homes across the UK came within hours of power cuts after the National Grid issued an emergency call for electricity companies to reduce demand on one of the coldest days of the year.
The companies were preparing to cut power or dim the lights on Thursday by lowering the voltage, after the grid issued a warning of a possible problem between 4.30pm and 6.30pm. Power generators were told to make more power available on the system, while distribution companies were informed that if no more power were made available they might have to cut some customers off temporarily. The highly unusual shortage comes as fears mount over the security of Britain's energy supplies..............

Here we go then ... be prepared folks, the numpty of Downing street and his cohorts have been more concerned with the rights of the Iraqi, and handing back dosh to Eurorip than taking care of their own... :D :D :D :D or you'd

First thing to go should be all the naf Christmas light displays people put up. (Though it seems it will be done next year, as people will have to obtain a public display licence and arrange for emergengy service cover :D )

we only just got mains electric, be a shame to lose it already  now where did I put that frigging genee ?

oh! now I remember, its my moorings

Why don't they introduce emergency laws that Ban closed premises from having lights on..It is a disgrace the amount of energy wasted by shops, offices and factories through pointless lighting..

Shops should be made to turn off their lights after 9pm, then back on at 7am UNLESS they are open to the public.

All street lighting should be shut off unless on roads with walkways..so A roads and motorways should be in darkness..Cars have lights..

'cos the insurance companies say their insurance is void otherwise.

Turn them all off, people can carry torches.

Cars may have lights, but they also have a loose nut holding the steering wheel and they find it difficult enough even IN the light.

Few years ago a bypass was built just outside Bedford, (it had no lights) in less than 1 week after opening, there were several accidents (one fatal)

a week after that some one planted some bulbs, and up came lamp posts with working lights. (ok so no none actualy planted bulbs, but within 2 weeks of it opening it had lights)

Well the question then is "so what"? A few weeks ago there was a head on crash near the Amazon warehouse on the A421 (part of the bypass) where a girl of 17 and her mother were killed. LIGHTS AREN'T THE CURE!!!!!!

all street lights that have the tops changed are always replaced with something brighter. 100W SON from 55W SOX etc. street lights waste far too much power.

there is a row of shops near me. iceland has all windows at the front and the only shutter is on the door. all lights are still on

Nah, 18,999,996 ... I know where we are going, and where we will be spending our disposable dosh.
Somewhere where power is reasonably priced, where one can live in the same country but pretty much a choice of climate ... bu##er the cold and the losing battle of combatting it and paying for that.
Bring it on ... not long now.
:D :D

BTW .. 3 power cuts from midnightish new yrs eve / day ... No snow temperature been near 8°C all day ... ooer!!
Have to say remainder of village across the valley had lights on... damp I suppose.
Here is a good one, when the power returns, sensor switched outside lighting comes on, some pretty big 'over the top' IMHO, floodlights too.
When we moved here it was a novelty, on a neighbour 'lighting' up I would take a look ... mostly nothing or car arriving / leaving .. what about the timing? 20 mins some of 'em, nuking futters with too much dosh is what I think, never look out now, if their floods come on ..... 'cry wolf' ignore totally, as the owners themselves do, what a waste of energy that is.

Here we go then .....

Russia cuts Ukraine gas supplies
Russia supplies 30% of Ukraine's gas
Russia has begun shutting off a pipeline that supplies gas to Ukraine, after last-ditch talks failed to settle a price dispute........The crisis has sparked fears that Russian exports to Western Europe could be hit, as most of the gas is channelled through Ukrainian pipelines, but Moscow insists there will be no disruption.
EU governments are convening a meeting of their gas industry experts in Brussels on 4 January to discuss the crisis.

The official response has been received - Ukraine has turned down our offer
Sergei Kupriyanov
Gazprom spokesman

Q&A: Gas crisis
Ukraine currently pays $50 per 1,000 cubic metres of gas. Gazprom wants to increase the price to what it says is the market rate of $230.

Russian gas supplies account for about 30% of Ukraine's total consumption....

Here is a thought, EU decides to pay more to help Ukraine, passes the cost to US !! They already squeezing us hard...... Property rich UK'ers can afford it.... BTW major Euro players have 55 days stock, UK 11 days, Who is looking down the gun barrel then?
:D :D :D

We're still on clockwork here. No gas, no main sewerage and the difference will be....... nothing. We haven't managed to drag our village into the 19th century yet, so I don't suppose we'll notice much difference.
