Heathrow not free

It was introduced two years ago.
surely any sensible person checks things like this before arrival?

A sensible person would expect basic public services to not be exploited like this for profit. If every corner you turn is gated for exploitation, life becomes sh*t.

Bristol airport is a regular drop off for me - friends, family etc. You can drop off for free at the silver zone car park - and the flyers get the shuttle bus to the airport. Several times I realised I was the mug ending up paying the six quid for the drop off, so, last time, about 4 or 5 weeks ago, I said I would drop them at the silver zone. Not a chance. They paid the six quid.

Thanks for the tip. Didn't know about that. Naturally the airport keep this quiet.

Well, genius, it's not signposted in the aiport. You are directed to short stay/rip off car park for drop off and collection - nowhere else. No mention of alternatives anywhere on signage, so you assume free drop off doesn't exist. If you believe something doesn't exist, you don't usually go searching for it.
Bit of research can pay dividends

Edinburgh is the very same. Once you are in the lane for the parking, there is no way out and then, you have to pay to get out.
I see it as a ransom.

You don't have to take the car. It is a private company who set parking/pick up/drop off charges. Glasgow has pick up/drop off charges, but I know that before I go.

I am driving to Southampton in a few months for a cruise which is going to cost me hundreds of pounds to park. It's a bit of a stretch to say I'm being held to ransom, when I choose to drive there in the first place.

The point I was trying to make, is that one might not want to go to the airport but, if you get stuck in that lane you're going through the drop off/pick up point and have to pay to get out.

Yes, a racket. Something that was provided as no cost as a service, then later forcing you to pay unreasonable fee for stopping for a minute or two. Judging by the ever expanding car parks at Bristol, I'm guessing a significant part of the airport's revenue comes from parking. It's not uncommon for the parking to cost a lot more than return flights on a budget airline.

Manchester has been getting more tricky over the last few years.
Every road leading into it has these signs:

100 quid fine if you stop anywhere except in a barrier controlled parking area.

Is there a catch? Is the long stay more than 30 minutes of walk away from the terminals? With luggage, children, and old grannies tagging along, it may not be feasible.
they provide a bus.
