hi-fi power supply fault?

As stated above it's not likely to be a capacitor if it is in series with an AC supply. I would agree it is probably either an inductor/choke or a fuse. Can you give an exact description with measurements or even better post a picture up. Is there any code under or near it on the circuit board?

Unfortunately I've temporarily re-assemled the unit but on the pcb next to the component is printed somthing like C46 and it does look like a small disc capacitor in series with the live input to the transformer. Like you say though an inductor/choke perhaps.

More than likely the component is a varistor. These protect the unit from high transient voltages.

Replacements are available from RS components.

more than likely its a little blue thing on Thursdays and a red thing the rest of the week.

we can guess for ever and still not get it right.

Persevere! That way, one day you may get it working. It will be worth it when it does. And there will be less in the landfill.

persever with what? a little blue thing, or is the red one better?or a purple one?

we need more info on said item, how can he persevere if he doesnt know what it is?

As stated with it (the blue thingy) by-passed the unit works but won't turn off completely. I would prob. get away with a lamp type on/off switch but as my daughter might fall asleep with it left on the fire-risk becomes an issue. Next time I open it up I'll wip out the component and attempt to post a pic. Thanks again for all the help/advice so far.

Sony diagrams are very common on the web, what year was it made?
also is there a chassis number on the circuit boards (any numbers really).

All help find the diagram, I'll browse through my service cd's later.

Hi it's a model HCD-EP303, there is a serial number, I'll just go and check. It's 6136606. Thanks.

Just re-read and I missed that the OP said it was shaped like a disc, and is blue. As Alford said, Varistor it probably is.

I'd still like some measurements or even better a photo.

Poxy site - got an error when I posted above, tried again and didn't notice that it had chucked away my typing.

It's about time we had laws to force manufacturers to design and build products in a way that facilitates repairs, to force them to keep spares available for a period of time after the product is discontinued and to make service/repair documentation freely available....

A varistor is generally used for surge suppression and would usually be connected across the incoming mains, not in series with it. They have a very high resistance up to a certain voltage which then drops rapidly when a surge hits, thus clamping the surge to a safe level.

Anyway, the service manual for the unit is available from the nodevice.com web-site for 5.95 euros.

Gboy, can you please look at the data label on it, see if there is a date of manufacture.

I have searched through my 1999-2002 CD's but it would really help to know when it was made so I know which one to dig out.
I have tried several sites I normally get service manuals from and your manual is not there.
I'll search through my pile of disks I have here at work in a mo.
(about 30gb worth..... lol).

I collect circuit diagrams for all sorts, sad I know but I draw them daily so its like porn to me..... lol

Hi mattylad, the place where manufacture date would normally be displayed just says "manufactured:" but must be missing a stick on date.

The receiver was purchased in Aug 2002 however so I'd guess it was made sometime around 2001/2002 .
