It should always spin in the same direction when connected to one wire and opposite direction when connected to the other, so sounds like you do have a suspect motor.
Windings probably shorted which would explain sometimes changes direction and sometimes not when switching the wiring configuration.
What has been missed is the fact that the cap needs to be connected as well.
Cap with 4 lugs (if you only have 2 lugs and use piggy back connectors the same principle applies)
Connect live to one side of the cap only!
The red and black of the motor then connects to each side of the cap.
The white connecs to the neutral.
Which way does it spin?
Now switch the live to the other side of the cap.
Which way does it spin now?
You should also notice that the motor kicks in with a bit more power!
You will find your motor is fine. Still convinced its the timer.
