Yes, the workings were tiny. Just a handful of miners. This area is riddled with them. Funny enough, I was lucky to visit Europe's last working deep-shaft iron or mine in Egremont, just before it closed. Same sort of thing. A tiny operation with only a couple of dozen miners, digging tiny amounts of very high quality ore, for the dye and cosmetics industry. There's plenty of ore left - they reckon about 20 million workable tons, but just not economically viable to extract it. Copper was further South and East of here, really.
There are a few bits of a Roman bathhouse, about half a mile from Ravenglass, but that's about it, really. The good stuff is round Hadrian's Wall.
