A few months ago, I moved into a bungalow. The Glow Worm 30cxi combi is in the loft along with the pipe work, which drops down through the ceiling to the rads.

We've just had a proper/cold winter, and the bungalow gets quite cold during the day when I am at work. My cat is getting on a bit, and it would be unfair for him to spend all day in an unheated house, but heating the whole house all day would cost a fortune.

Is there a method where I could zone possibly the small bedroom, so that only the radiator in that room is heated when I'm out.

I am quite practical, but would like to keep the method as simple as possible. I would like pehaps just a switch to change between whole house and bedroom only heating. What else do I need and how do I layout the pipe alterations?

Given that a cat has a fur coat, have you thought of trying a cardboard box with a cat sized hole in it?

Cats love boxes & one will keep it warm if you put an old blanket in it.

You would have to change the heating to a 'S' plan or even a 'Y' plan, seperate the small bedroom rad and pipe work from the rest of the system and then plumb it back to the HW side of the 'Y' plan, or a seperate 2 port valve on a 'S' plan.

Then fit a programmable room stat in this bedroom for the cat to operate

I thought my other half was bad enough, leaving the tele and radio so the cats don't feel lonely, lights on so they can see properly and the whole house heated up so they don't get cold moving from room to room

Guess who pays the bills?

Not her

now now

OP, you can get pet warming pads which are about 2ft by 1.5ft and they work a bit like an electric blanket. My cat wasn't a good mother to her kittens and left them to go cold and hungry, so I put the kitten box on the pad, it worked very well and the kittens were happy again. The pads don't cost much to run either, about 60 watts IIRC.

I must admit i am also guilty of leaving the radio and light on for the cats when I go out

Many thanks for your replies (except the obvious one!)

Not sure about the 9 hours in a cardboard box in a sub-zero room suggestion. Think I will try Gas4you's suggestion with the S plan.

May try the heat pad first this year though, as there's not much in the kitty!

Cat flap in airing cupboard door?

Is that the coupe or the saloon?

Its a combi, so no nice warm airing cupboard unfortunately.

Its a coupe , silver birch roof over smoke grey body, 1971 auto (the Rover, not the cat :D )
Nice old bus, really tidy, drinks a lot like owner but its worth the expense for the V8 sound.

Just like the cat, it leads a sheltered life. Next question - how do I zone the garage for heating!!

Why not stick timer on 'constant' and either install a programable roomstat, or one of the new honeywel stats with the 'eco' feature.

Then when you go to work you will be able to set a lower temperature (12/15 degrees?) and when you get home you can press another button to take it back up to 20/21 degrees?

Cardboard box in a lined cardboard box, inner box filled with a couple of old woollies, preferably unwashed ( I kid you not) and in darkish corner.

Leave heat off all day, or cat will overheat. Understandable as your concern is, the above solution will make your cat think he is in pussycatheaven; you may have a problem persuading him to come out though.

Give it a rest. You may Think its cold because us humans are soft.

You must be either minted or daft or both.

I know you probably love your cat but have a listen to yourself.

The cat will be fine without the heating on, i guarantee it ;)

Why did such an ordinary, harmless post prompt certain people to advocate animal abuse and cruelty, even if they thought it was funny - which probably makes it worse? What goes on in their minds?

If the original question had been about children, and someone had suggested burning or microwaving them, I think that the whole forum would quite rightly have condemned them.

There are some sick minds out there! :(
