How to fit an appliance valve (Ed.)

Well if it is, it's not connected to anything.

There is another white pipe connected to the waste pipe, is that not the condensate pipe?

Ah, could be the angle...is this a better shot?

Oh crap - stop the bus.

This looks like a kitchen fitter trying to do everything and failing badly at the plumbing.

OK @thomasbrig - I'm really sorry to say - that all needs redone -properly

1) At least he's used copper water pipe but has push fit when it could have easily been soldered and it needs to be clipped properly. Especially @ the appliance valve, as that will move.
2) That IKEA waste and flexi pipe will be guaranteed to cause problems, how long is anyone's guess but probably sooner rather than later - that needs all that grey crap ripped out and a proper McAlpine 11/2 sink trap/waste system fitted (pic below)
3) that new sink trap setup comes with 2 appliance spigots so that double connector on the left outflow can be removed. The appliance drain hoses will need to be raised up properly. They usually come with formers/supports to allow the pipes to be raised up and over (pic below)
4) The condensate (from the boiler) should really have an air break, given it's plumbed into the sink waste like that. Typically then can block up with all the stuff that's typically thrown down the sink. It looks like it needs to be clipped properly too

What's the white pipe behind the waste trap in picture 2 from?
That's the condensate run by the looks of it m8 - you can see it tracking along the back, then heads forward and down at the left corner behind the drain hose and then across into that saddle clamp.

Thanks so much Madrab for the extensive response, really appreciated! I feel like he rushed this too, its already leaking a bit where the sink waste meets main waste pipe. I have a new IKEA sink, but guessing McAlpine system could still go into this, perhaps with some adapter? Cheers again - giving me much needed information!

The Mcalpine waste/trap setup will fit any standard sink waste outlets. Well most of them, some seem to be a little tight into the sink waste hole and need altered a little.

Thank you so much! Yes, I saw there were these available that might allow Mcalpine fittings to be used on the IKEA sink?

Would really need to see what the connection is when the grey lower half was removed from the sink waste. If that's removed and it's a standard 40mm then you don't need the adapter, the whole sink trap setup will fit as is. Worst case is you need to change the actual sink waste to a standard basket strainer waste, if it's a standard sized waste hole of course.

Nice one Rob - I saw in the reviews for this that people have attached it to IKEA sinks before, so if needed I could swap this for whats there currently, then proceed to fit all Mcalpine from there:

Definitely - ideally tho, you would use a McAlpine strainer waste - they are more expensive but much better build quality

McAlpine Strainer

Ok brilliant thanks everyone, so my picture shows the bottom connection as OFF. Plumber left it that way, so wondered why the dishwasher wasn't working...will turn it horizontal. Cheers
Yes, turning the bottom valve handle horizontal will indeed allow water to flow to the dishwasher, BUT it will turn off the water flow to the washing machine. The arrangement of the valves that your"plumber" has fitted cannot supply water to both the washing machine and dishwasher at the same time. The 3 way lower valve needs to be replaced with a T-piece and a 2 way valve feeding the dishwasher should be fitted to the branch from the T-piece

Oh god, the list grows...! Thank you Chris for flagging this. I will get him to try it out first hand so he can see it for himself.
