This sink has a metal section from the plughole into the plastic u bend, which has totally corroded away and leaked. Can it be replace or do I need a new sink? If its fixable how do I do that? What sealant should I use? Thanks

Yes it can all be replaced without needing a new basin. If you are handy @ DIY then it's relatively straightforward to change

Only trouble is it can get very frustrating as a new basin waste can leak unless it is fitted correctly.

You will find many vids on Youtube how to disconnect the current pop up waste you have (push rod behind the tap) and others that'll show you how to replace the waste trap and the waste itself , if you feel you can swap the stuff out after looking at them then then no reason not to take a bash at it.

Just have a plastic basin and towels to catch any water

Thanks. What kind of sealant would I use to seal it to the basin?

If you are going to DIY it then the main area that needs to be right, to avoid any leaks is the basin wastes main sealing washer, that sits under the basin between the large nut of the waste and the bottom section of the actual basin.

Best thing I could recommend that you get that'll minimise the chance of that being the area for leaks, is what's called a basin mate or seal - one of either of these >

Silicone shouldn't then be needed, just need to ensure the basin nut is tightened up enough - try to obtain a basin waste that has a brass nut as it's less likely to strip or snap when tightening up.
You will also need to take the pop up lever mechanism off from underneath and take rod out from behind the tap and just use a click clack or my preference a captive/swivel waste.

Also, take note of the distance/dimensions of the basin trap from the waste pipe and basin as the new one will be different, it may be an idea to get an adjustable height basin trap as that'll allow some flexibility

Do you think this would work with the basin waste seal you linked? i can’t see how its tightened onto the basin https://www.screwfix.com/p/flomasta-slotted-lever-basin-waste/615kj

No probably not, not enough space - the whole base section (the whole section below the white washer)that has the rod fitted into it is the part that tightens up onto the section that fits through the waste hole in the basin. You need to get it lined up properly but tight enough to seal up correctly and using silicone would be advised but there isn't 'an amount' specifically, more like 'just enough' if that makes sense.

BTW - Fitting a pop up waste (the rodded type you have) is harder to DIY fit than a click/clack or captive
