I wish we had big Don in charge over here !

NATO plans to offer US President Donald Trump a compromise on Greenland. The Alliance hopes that this will reduce tensions over the island, Handelsblatt reports.

NATO sources told DPA that the Alliance wants to offer Trump a significant expansion of its military presence in the Arctic.

Greenland is important because of its rich raw material resources and as a base for military control of the Arctic. In addition, shipping lanes are becoming more accessible, at least in summer, as climate change intensifies.

According to media reports, this initiative is being discussed with Trump in informal talks. New defense plans adopted in 2023 may serve as a basis for strengthening NATO's presence in the Arctic. These are classified documents that provide for strengthening deterrence and defense capabilities in the far north as well.

The United States is already using the Pituffik space base in Greenland. This base, among other things, supports missile warning systems, missile defense, and space surveillance missions. Danish military forces are also present in Greenland.

The agency adds that the debate over Greenland is dangerous for NATO. The alliance has to fear for its credibility, and on the other hand, it would be a disaster if the United States withdrew from NATO over such a dispute.

During his first term in the White House, US President Donald Trump declared his desire to buy Greenland. After winning the election in 2024, he resumed these talks.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has emphasized that the island is not for sale. According to the Financial Times, Frederiksen and Trump had a conversation before the inauguration. According to the agency's sources, Trump was aggressive and confrontational on the Greenland issue.

Recently, the US President expressed confidence that the island will be under the control of the United States.
Did you see and hear Anders Vistisen?

The interesting question for me is whether Trump's negotiating style has helped or hindered his objective. I read an article the other day which said Denmark were open to this type of discussion with Trump back in 2019, but he was only interested in buying the whole island. Also, will this proposal actually be acceptable to Trump.

I only very recently found out that Trump expressed an interest in 2019 and was even more surprised to learn President Truman offered a $100 million for Greenland in 1947.
Lurking behind all this is the fact that Russia and China are making inroads into the Artic which security wise would be bad news for America. The base they already have there is an early warning set up and it's looking like enlarging that and setting up a deterrent is needed.
Trumps noise has already stirred Denmark into increasing defence expenditure on Greenland (I think they literally have something like 2 small boats and 12 dog sleds) and now we have NATO wanting to get involved.
As we've said before, Trump will make an outrageous suggestion/demand and slowly things will move in the direction he wants, it's the way he operates, it might not be to everybodys taste but he gets things done.

I read yesterday that BMW have started lobbying the German Govt to reduce tariffs on cars imported from America, I didn't know that yank cars to the EU attracted a 10% tariff whilst EU cars to America attract a 2.5% tariff. Suddenly some of his views started to make more sense.

I had no idea about the car tariffs. But there will probably be other areas where the balance of the tariffs is currently reversed. And the EU are big enough to damage USA in return.

I agree completely that the West needs to secure Greenland from China and Russia. But I honestly believe Trump is intent only on outright ownership, because of the strong emotional connection he has to real estate. And I am much less confident about Trump negotiating anything after hearing his ideas about Gaza. They seemed utterly detached from reality. He is an enigma to me, but I always come back to wondering how did the world's top business negotiator manage to bankrupt six businesses and bring himself to the edge of insolvency.

No, he really doesn't.

He works on the " If you say it often enough. some people will believe it" You, and some others, fall into this category.

Look at the recent spat with Columbia. His headlines say he won, the facts say different

He can make Nato stronger, just by keeping Denmark, Greenland and the rest of Europe as friends not adversaries.

Just by doing that Greenland is an asset.

Sounds like he's learning fast to me if he wants the EU to pay the same tariffs as America pays.
you dont look beyond the headlines

USA has a 25% tariff on imported light trucks and SUVs

if you look at the reason EU has a 10% tariff on car imports its due to previous trade tensions...........tariff wars arent the simple answer the simpleton thinks. Last time he started a trade war EU put high tariffs on Florida orange juice

you do realise the biggest car exporter in USA to EU is BMW right?

BMW is the largest car exporter in the USA by value
