£85 with the renewal of your passport they have got to be kidding!
If they want the scheme then they should not charge for it, i will not apply for one and will suffer the consequences as i believe it's a personal choice thing. the "it doesn't affect those that have nothing to hide" arguments don't hold up here as it's an issue of cost not guilt of any kind. If it means no more holidays abroad then i will take that as an infringement of my freedom, i've always paid for a passport but the cost of this card is outrageous it should never cost this much, if they argue that admin is most of the cost then i argue that computers will handle the admin with a skeleton crew to look after them and not an excuse to just get more money out of us.

Why the hell don't all of these agencies (passport dvla etc) get their heads together and come up with one document that does all instead of carrying all of that crap. If they did that I wouldn't object to the £85.00 for a combined passport and id and drivers licence, we proably pay that separately anyhow.

As it stands at the moment I don't wish to shell out another £85.00 for a piece of plastic to tell me who I am, I know that already.

I disagree with the cost and feel that a merger of all documents is a bit tricky and open to abuse. However i feel that an ID card would be a good idea. Not for stopping terrorism but for everyday things like underage drinking. Great idea in the states of " if you cannot produce id to get a drink you wont get one, regardless of how old you look" If we introduced that over here just imagine how quiet it would be on frdays and saturdays witrh out the gangs of underage yobs terrorising the neighbourhood

What the point of having a ID card when it not compulsory to carry one if you're arrested ?

I hope you're right but can't see how it will because if the underage cannot get alcohol drink, they will find another way like raid a off-license shop so crime rate will go up again. My uncle own a pharmacist shop and has so many break in because of drug user, so how can ID card stop all this ?
My own opinion is, I think the ID card is make sure you pay your taxes because remember the government always tell you the half truth for the real reason.
I understand the spanish have a ID card in system and it didn't stop the terrorist bombing the Madrid train.

Apparently according to this feature the fines for non compliance are also pretty hefty too.

But believe it or not JP may be trying to redeem himself and save us all (fat chance  )

I will let someone else comment on who may not pay!

Obviously the Gov are probably after the benefit cheats more than anything else, but these charges and fines seem OTT. More back door taxes? Including it with your passport is downright state blackmail.

I know that the cost for it is passed back to us whether it is paid for through taxes or when we renew our passport, but at least if it comes out of tax-pounds then the effective cost will vary depending on income. £85 is a lot of money for most people, for something that doesn't really offer any noticeable benefit, especially as it is something that we haven't asked for.

I still can't see how it will cost £85 to administrate though. The cost of the card will be no more than a couple of quid. It will take 5 minutes of manpower to get you entered on the system, the system will cost a lot to buy and maintain but the cost of that will be divided between millions of those £85's. So the real cost is surely only £10-£20 tops for an ID card?

I can't help but wonder if someone is profiting from this? Does anyone know if the IT has been contracted out?

**** idea. i use my drivin licence as ID. i dont need anything else to prove who i am. i wont be payin £85 for a piece of plastic. as for costs, it costs £9 to upgrade a provisional to full (did) so that proves £9 is enough to get an ID card, be entered onto the DVLA database and pay for the database to be maintained.

i bet immigrants get a free ID, at our expense.

oh yes, they will get a free one and also a free caravan and half acre of land to live a nomadic lifestyle!!

I do not know as yet, but you can bet your backside the contract will go to Accenture or/and EDS. In the true spirit of free enterprise, of course! ;)

I am a British citizen, and I have a passport and birth certificate to prove it, as well as a driver's license (which according to DVLA is not evidence of identity  ).

I will not be applying for an ID card, and I certainly will not be handing over yet more money to this bunch of dictators in government,

Come on Kendo -- pay up, pay up and play the game !! You must pay for those that will not / cannot afford it !!
Obviously they are planning for failure ... no cost failure, as the 'punters' will have funded the whole debacle !!
P

I won't bother getting one until it gets to the "get one or go to prison/pay a fine" stage. I bet that there are millions of people who will do the same either out of political beliefs, stubborness, or because they just leave things.

I know this seldom works, but at least it will p*ss off the people behind the scheme. Also the problems caused by masses of last-minuters will forever be associated with these particular people.

For an example of what I mean, Ken Livinstone has done lots in London, possibly largely positive. I wouldn't know. For all I know, he has single-handedly built a hospital for children suffering from terrible diseases, and formulated a plan for world peace and an end to hunger and poverty. No. The only things I think of when I hear his name are "Congestion Charge", "Congestion Charge balls-up" and "Traffic light resequencing balls-up". These are the projects that were deeply unpopular with the people, and people will remember him for these. The same will happen for those behind ID cards (including Davie B if he ever gets his job back).
