If labour got in to power can you imagine the chaos ......

But that's extactly the problem; Amazon doesn't need to relocate their warehouse anywhere, they just open a new office somewhere, designate it as their head office, and channel all their receipts through it. I don't now whether an individual country can overide international laws, and tell a company that they will be taxed on sales made in their country, but I know HMRC don't bother to do it.

btw they already do it. Amazon declare their taxes in Luxemburg which is 1% lower than the UK. Further there are various tax breaks applicable which mean the effective rate is even lower.

there is a move afoot to be less lenient with tax-dodging millionaires and multinationals gaming the tax systems of various countries.

Some of the tax havens are resistant to it because they make a profit at the expense of other countries. To our shame, Theresa threatened the EU that she would do the same.

This kind of reform will only work if the major countries concerned act together.

The next UK government might be less tolerant of tax-dodging billionaires. Can you guess why?

Furthermore, although the UK currently intends to give up its vote and its voice in the debating chamber, much of Europe is also moving towards reform. Let's hope that we can fit in with whatever they decide.

Tax dodgers mean the rest of us pay more and get less.

"In the closing moments, we are told that Mazzarello skipped the country during his trial, leaving a £46.6m hole in the public piggy bank. He was convicted and sentenced to 14 years in his absence. Sure, it would have been glorious to see him disappearing on a speedboat, hurling fifties into the foam and cackling, while chased by Keystone Cops. But instead we remember him at his arrest, a dumpy little thing, clutching a ciggie and looking for all the world as though he has lost his mum in a shopping centre."

Some of the right-wing press will describe this as "increasing tax" and suggest that the honest citizenry will suffer.

It is worth remembering that as well as the notorious tax-dodging boss of the Daily Mail, the Murdoch empire which owns the Sun, the Times and Sky; and the pornographer who owns the Express, gain a lot from avoiding UK tax. Maybe you can't trust them to tell the truth when they're scared it will hit their pockets.

Can you think why they are all running relentless anti-Corbyn campaigns?

One can only assume that Gasbag is also a billionaire tax-dodger.

if Starbucks and Macdonalds had actually paid any appreciable tax, that might be worthwhile.

They don't. They only started paying tax when they got forced into it.

Starbucks jiggled around last year so it paid some tax as a gesture of goodwill to head off contempt and a boycott. Its complex tax-dodging schemes had become a national scandal.

"Starbucks has revealed that the London headquarters it set up after a public outcry over alleged tax avoidance paid $15m in UK corporation tax in the 15 months to September. "

"Following the controversy — in which it was accused of shifting profits out of Britain through the payment of royalties — the company made a voluntary corporation tax contribution of £20m."

Mcdonalds agreed to move when it was under pressure after an EU tax investigation

"Dec 08, 2016

McDonald 's said on Thursday it would move its international tax base to the United Kingdom from Luxembourg after coming under increased scrutiny from European Union regulators over its tax arrangements in the small country."

http://fortune.com/2016/12/08/mcdonalds-uk-luxembourg-eu-tax/

"The burger chain’s tax arrangements in Luxembourg have been under intense scrutiny by EU antitrust officials and trade unions and tax justice campaigners have alleged that it avoided more than €1bn (£840m) in taxes in Europe between 2009 and 2013.

An EU official said earlier this year that the McDonald’s case shows “just how far some companies push tax authorities to avoid paying any taxes”."

Nice to see that pressure gets results.

Nevertheless UK tax receipts have gone up substantially despite corporation tax reducing. In this world as Doggit implies, corporations can "choose" where they declare their income and countries wont work together, because they actually want to compete. No offence to the southern irish, but southern ireland is a massive parasite on the UK economy. No doubt they might argue its payback for years of British rule.

Its quite difficult to compare, but there is strong evidence that suggests low tax economies generate higher net revenue than high tax economies.

It doesnt seem to me that taking one tax only shows a clear comparison.

The business rates hike earlier this year has meant a big increase to many small and medium businesses. Since business premises get almost nothing in return it is basically a business tax.

And it's putting many companies out of business. The independant shoe shop that I use for my daughter, has now closed after 132 in business.
