Installing a NEST to a Vaillant Turbomax

My apologies yes I meant a 4 core cable. But do you know if my comments in my previous posts are correct.

You leave the switch on continous after installating the nest.

I would follow the manufacturers instructions on the suitable distance of the receiver.

If you have the same boiler as mine (see previous msgs) then i would suggest following miked's instructions as thats what i did and it works perfectly with no issues what so ever

Thanks for your reply vim sorry to sound dumb but can I confirm when you say leave switch on continously do you mean the switch on the timer board to be in middle position which looks like a sun.

Also can I confirm that on the board my terminals 3 and 4 have a wire connecting them together do I remove this. I think this is there because I don't currently have a thermostat on my system so is it some sort of loop.
Thanks

Hi Thanos,

Can u take a pic of the front of your boiler (control panel) and post it on here, just want to make sure its the same as mine. If it is then the dial should point up north (sun icon), which currently for you should turn the boiler on continously.

So to clarify if the dial is:-

Left = Heating perm off
Up = Heating perm on (keep it on this setting permanently after the installation of nest)
Right = Heating on timer (you won't need to use this function again after installation of nest).

Hope the above makes sense....

The connection between 3 and 4 on the boiler remove this completely and then follow the instructions as outlined by Mikeyd and it should all work.

Good luck and let us know how u get on.

Hi Vim
Your exactly correct in what your saying about my boiler operation from the front timer switch panel. You have confirmed to me what I need to know I will try and get this done over the weekend and let you know how it goes. I'm attaching a pic of the front of my boiler but I'm sure it's the same as you just described.
Thanks

I can confirm that the control panel is the same as mine.

Also note that once you've wired everything and powered up... nest will take you through some tests.... 1 of which is testing the boiler heating turns on and then off from the nest thermostat.... when i tested this i was expecting it to turn on and off like a light switch (i.e. instantly) but note that initially there is a small time delay between your boiler turning on and off... this over time does work more like a switch.

Only mentioning this because you may soon have doubts about your wiring as i did but then realised that the thermostat and boiler takes sometime to bond and build a relationship :)

Good luck and dont electrocute yourself :)

Thanks for that last bit of advice Vim about the delay in the boiler turning on after initial set up because your right I would of questioned my wiring.

I know you said check the manufacturer guidelines for distance for the heat link install from the boiler but can I check where you placed yours in relation to your boiler.

Its not far from the boiler.... it is more than the recommended distance though.

where is your boiler at the moment and is it going to be a problem fitting it as per the recommended guideline?

just trying to understand what the challenge here is?

The problem I've got is that my boiler is in a cupboard that is quite small and the only place I can see where I can put the heatlink is the top left corner which has the furthest distance from the boiler. I'm attaching some pics so you can see what I mean. When I checked the nest install guidelines they say 30cm away from the boiler so it doesn't have any interference from the boiler when communicating with the nest thermostat. If this is the only problem then surely it would be ok if I install it in the top left corner that way it will communicate with the nest thermostat ok because it will be on the next level up in my house towards the left of the boiler so no signal should be blocked between the two.

If there is no other place to install it then i would just install it where you said you would.

I think it should still work... if it doesnt i dont think it will damage the reciever (maybe someone else can confirm this). In which case you can think of plan B then.

I have to say that it applies to perhaps more than 50% of those I see with hot water cylinders!

The stat needs three wires, all potentially live, and are usually connected with a three core cable.

Tony

I was commenting on the sub topic of not having wires correctly colour coded.

The 50% was relating to the ones I see not properly colour coded.

Three wires all potentially live should not be connected with a blue ( ideally ) and certainly not a green colour.

A three core cable is suitable as the stats don't usually have any earth connection so an earth wires is not needed. But most installations have a three core, brown, blue and green which should never be used without additional marking.

Someone in this thread said he would "mark the wires later" which sounds potentially very dangerous as it can so easily be forgotten!

Mr agile, where do you purchase this 3 core cable i.e. three conductors in the cable where one conductor is not an earth conductor

You can buy the cable in any diy store it's called a 4 core cable because there is also an earth cable in the cable but you don't need to use it if not needed.

Heres a pic of where i've put my receiver.... its on the left wall...excuse the mess.
