Installing a printer

I take it your printer still doesn't work though?
I'm thinking as suggested above you should maybe try removing the other printer driver before you install the new one. Out of interest, do you have a restore point before you installed the printer driver the first time?
Which version of Vista do you have? Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate? Is it 32bit/64bit?
I take it you downloaded the driver from here?: http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/downloads.cgi?ccs=227:5:0:405:0:0[/QUOTE]
Sentence1 - correct.
Sentence2 - Done.
Sentence3 - Lost me there.
Sentences4&5 - Premium.
Sentence6 - Correct.

Can you do a system restore to prior the first time you installed the printer driver? I take it you have the 32bit version of Vista home premium?

Sorry, Spark123,but do you mean "did I" and "prior to". If so the answer is no because I didn't know how to. Don't know about the 32 bit part either.

Can you do a system restore to before you first installed the printer? When you go to system restore it should give you a number of dates which you can turn your PC back to. If you pick one prior to the date when you first tried to install the printer and restore to that it should hopefully remove traces of the driver, from there you can try a fresh installation. Leave the printer unplugged for now.
Each type of Vista was released in 32bit and 64bit. If you click start, right click computer and select properties it should be listed there how many bit operating system you have. The correct driver from the Lexmark website depends on wether you have a 32bit or a 64bit system.

Cheers Spark123, have just sent off an e-mail asking which one was on offer to download for my machine because as far as I can recall, I didn't have a choice. However, I'll check it out tomorrow if I dont get a quick reply.

Incidentally, am back on our new computer!

My son managed to muck-up our old one by trying to remove the 'plastic bit' he thought he left in a USB socket, using a screwdriver while the power was on. As a result we lost the internet and had to pay a local firm £65 to fit a "card"(?) to get us connected again. If he hadn't fiddled with the USB I wouldn't have had all these problems.

Pretty much all the instructions in my previous post.

But then you'll be too busy having the craic, muddying the water ! ;)

Windows Help - How-to Add or remove a printer (Left Click your mouse on these words)

Why? Because Lexmark at this place (Left Click your mouse on these words) say :-
Attention Windows Vista Users
If you have installed your printer on your PC using an original Lexmark Driver CD that came with your product and you are experiencing problems when printing, you may have installed the Windows XP driver.

Follow these steps to resolve:
· Disconnect your USB cable from your printer.
· Uninstall all Lexmark printer drivers on your PC.
· Download the correct Vista driver for your model.
· Install the driver on your PC.

Important - Do not reconnect the USB cable until the install software prompts the question of how the printer is connected....

If you have any of :- Lexmark X1110, Lexmark X1130, Lexmark X1140, Lexmark X1150, Lexmark X1155, Lexmark X1160, Lexmark X1170, Lexmark X1180, Lexmark X1185, Lexmark X1190, Lexmark X1195 Then Lexmark say use this driver installer :-
cjrX1100EN.exe: Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista
Large print because one may choose the wrong driver if only a single character differs... Get it here (Left Click your mouse on these words)

Left click on 'download now'
When presented with the option to 'run' or 'save'
I suggest you select 'save'
When offered a selection of locations to save the file, choose if you can, 'desktop' ok that and await the download to complete.
You should see the filename as above waiting just for you..
Right click on it and choose 'open' it may very well then 'run' installing a Lexmark driver or several...

If I can do that at my age, (not far behind you) having downed 3 pints of vintage, with a buxom blue eyed blonde bombshell on my knee, partially obscuring the screen with 43 ins of her DubiousDelights - you should be able to hiss it from your quiet little corner. ;) ;)

Hi Empip, I hope at this is not too much of a distraction, but I already have a folder with that code, minus the EXE, on my Windows opening page.

'Bolo' ... Start fresh, uninstall the Lexmark driver you have, as per instructions.
Then download to desktop and follow instructions on installation... You didn't know where the file was located after the last debacle, you cannot work in the dark... Read up, do you have 'Start' 'Help and Support' with Vista?
Look at printer wizards and all that then go for it...

JD you know she'll find her way back to the kennel... ;)

Hi Empip, your instructions were so clear, and the download took so long - 45 mins -that I really did think that I was there at last. But no, there is still the lack of communication between P and C.

Thanks for all your help guys, but I have installed and uninstalled this printer driver so many times that it reserves a temporary folder both here and at Lexmark. Enough is enough and so a big thank you to JohnD,Drewroof,Softus,Empip,Breezer,Spark123,Igorian and Persimmon for their attempts to solve my printer problem.

ps I can tell you now that a local computer, 'no fix -no fee' firm gave up on trying to fix my printer after two and a half hours.

pps A special thank you to Spark123 for his valuable tuition.
