The heat arises in high resistance points and these are (1) where the wires are connected and (2) where the plug pins contact the socket conductors. I have only ever had problems where the plug makes poor contact with the socket and it tends to be one pin only where both carry the same current.
I have never seen heat damage anywhere else including the rockers on socket switches which have very small contact patches.

Whilst your (1) and (2) are theoretically valid, and sometimes occur, as has been discussed the 'thermal damage to sockets' that sometimes occurs is seemingly most commonly due to a (3) - overheating originating in the vicinity of the fuse in the inserted plug, presumably due to high resistance contact between the fuse and the parts that are 'connecting' to it.

Yes, "blumming 'Eck" - but, to be fair to the culprit, it's an extremely easy sort of 'typo' to commit, and I am certainly quite commonly guilty. It most commonly arises when one decides to change the way in which one is wording something, but omits to change/remove all the relevant words !
