The heat arises in high resistance points and these are (1) where the wires are connected and (2) where the plug pins contact the socket conductors. I have only ever had problems where the plug makes poor contact with the socket and it tends to be one pin only where both carry the same current.
I have never seen heat damage anywhere else including the rockers on socket switches which have very small contact patches.
