IRA to stop violence?

1 hour and 40 minutes until the IRA ceasefire begins...

OK, so we've heard this before, but with their funding cut it is possible that the main IRA will keep to it. I think there is a real chance here.

But will the "Real IRA" and similar groups go along with this?

What do you guys think?

I hope you're right but I feel they will help others group of terrorists or is it that they are happy with their £26m robbery?

The armed struggle for a free united Ireland maybe over but as for racketeering, drugs, prostitution..............nah, too much money involved!

Tone will not worry ... "...I have this paper, on which is written.."

well this is all great news but as ever your forgetting the loyalist paramilitary groups,(UVF), (UDA), (LVF), Ulster Freedom Fighters, the Red Hand Defenders and the Orange Volunteers, loyalists’ attacks have generally drawn far less media attention than the IRA. loyalist paramilitaries killed an estimated 864 civilians (most of them Catholic), compared with an estimated 728 civilians (most of them Protestant) killed by the IRA. Experts say loyalist groups have often acted out of religious hatred, while the IRA has more often targeted British security officers.
Religious violence, harassment, and intimidation during the summer “marching season,” when hard-line Protestants don bowlers and orange sashes and parade through Catholic neighborhoods to celebrate centuries-old battlefield victories. If we are really hoping for an end to the violence these and the loyalist paramilitary groups have to be stopped, put the past behind us and make a fresh start.

I dont know where you got that load from Richard but it is a known fact that the IRA deliberartely and accidently killed more catholics than the other sides did, infact even our Gerry was questioned on it once and refused to answer, he was quite stumped at the time, but whoever the anorack was who worked the figures out they were actually correct

OK Freddie tell us about the loyalist terrorists? I'm gonna try and stay calm on this one but the whole subject is so awash with years of propaganda its not going to be easy. and going back to the original question " will the "Real IRA" and similar groups go along with this?"

No N Richard you are going down the wrong road i was just questioning your figures thats all.

Terrorists are terrorist scum of the earth, the IRA's claim of freedom fighters is rubbish as they started this killing lark and couldnt wait to kill the first British soldier all those years back the occupying force they called it. The Loyalists claimed they were fighting back which they were in a way even thought they started persicuting catholics in the first place which led to PIRA-------------but all scum.

Fredddie, whilst I also question the numbers quoted by Richard as being light, I would point out that it was not the IRA that started the current "troubles", it was in fact so called "Loyalist" gangs who started to attack and burn the homes of Catholics in Belfast in 1966. The troubles then escalated to shootings and several bombings, at this point the Government sent Troops to Ulster to actually protect the Catholic minority from the Protestant majority.

The IRA made a tactical and strategic error in attacking the security forces, they could have achieved so much more by not allowing their resentment and ferver to spill over into the violent armed struggle we all know of.

I welcome the statement made today, I only hope that they are true to their word and do as ALL the people of Ulster wish, stop the violence, find a peaceful and lasting solution to the issues and allow the Irish (Northern)to enjoy the freedoms that we take for granted.

However, let us not forget that some of the biggest killers in Ulster were not Catholics, they were so called "Loyalists", and that gobshiite Ian Paisley is the biggest protagonist of them all.

According to figures on the News, 3658 people died in the modern "troubles" from March 1966 until July 1st 2005. Of that 1376 were known to have died at the hands of the IRA or other republican groups, 1783 died at the hands of Protestant "Loyalist" groups and 499 at the hands of Security Forces.

But i havent said what you implied i meant at the beginning of your post-------------the British army was sent to the North to protect the catholics from the Protestant not Loyalist thugs----------the IRA stood for I Ran Away in those days and got a lot of ridicule from catholics so they formed the Provisionals and in their great scheme of the things killed a British soldier because they couldnt have an occupying force in Ireland as they put it, and i think one of those founder members of the Provisionals is the man who started the Real IRA
