Fredddie, whilst I also question the numbers quoted by Richard as being light, I would point out that it was not the IRA that started the current "troubles", it was in fact so called "Loyalist" gangs who started to attack and burn the homes of Catholics in Belfast in 1966. The troubles then escalated to shootings and several bombings, at this point the Government sent Troops to Ulster to actually protect the Catholic minority from the Protestant majority.
The IRA made a tactical and strategic error in attacking the security forces, they could have achieved so much more by not allowing their resentment and ferver to spill over into the violent armed struggle we all know of.
I welcome the statement made today, I only hope that they are true to their word and do as ALL the people of Ulster wish, stop the violence, find a peaceful and lasting solution to the issues and allow the Irish (Northern)to enjoy the freedoms that we take for granted.
However, let us not forget that some of the biggest killers in Ulster were not Catholics, they were so called "Loyalists", and that gobshiite Ian Paisley is the biggest protagonist of them all.
According to figures on the News, 3658 people died in the modern "troubles" from March 1966 until July 1st 2005. Of that 1376 were known to have died at the hands of the IRA or other republican groups, 1783 died at the hands of Protestant "Loyalist" groups and 499 at the hands of Security Forces.
