Is the dust really THAT bad?

Hello all!

We'll be having a downstairs extension with shower/wc room very soon (hopefully) and are hearing nightmare stories about the amount of dust there will be. We're resigned to putting everything downstairs into storage somewhere, and obviously we know there'll be a lot of upheaval and dust, etc, throughout downstairs, but is it really necessary for us (incl 2 kids) to move out? Surely there must be some way of protecting the upstairs from the dust using heavy duty sheeting? (Please?)

Any advice/comments from people who have survived would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

it shouldn't be that bad when we do anything like that we always sheet off the room we are working in, just completely empty the room where the knock through will be, take out everything including the curtains and carpet if you want to keep it and expect to have to redecorate.
No real need to move out.
Might be a bit like camping if its the kitchen you are extending.

Just make sure the guys doing it dust sheet properly, water any loose dust down and give a good clear up after.
