…and economic migrants.
I knew nothing about this crossing from Africa to Lampedusa, but having done a bit of reading, its been happening for years and has a number of factors.

In the sense that most of those crossing are not directly escaping war or persecution as such at a simplistic level they might be described as economic migrants.

Most of them in the Sept crossings seem to be sub Saharan nationalities which have basically been purged from Tunisia, particularly Sfax

these people are pretty desperate, they fleeing because life is so intolerable, it’s not like they are “economic migrants” simply fancying a better job in Italy.

in the past however I get the impression Lampedusa became a way to reach EU and some migrants/refugees were able to enter EU where they ended up as cheap Labour

for those interested in more detail, there’s some here

Vonder line (EU) said they have a 10 point plan to sort out the caper

Not as full as every 3 star hotel.
Conservatives have no interest in speeding processing…why should they when their mates at Serco, Deloitte, G4S are creaming in money from these hotel contracts, detention centres, phoney schemes like Rwanda

but hey when yer vote Tory it’s what you get

Do you honestly think it will be any different under labour ?

Everything will be different under a Labour government: the grass will be greener; the rivers cleaner; the air will feel fresher, more alive than ever before. You'll never have it so good.

America has 96 people per sq mile
UK has 725 people per square mile
If anywhere can take a few more people it’s America
mind you Scotland has just 168 people per square, so they can take a few more as well
I've said in other threads, I think the SNP briefly floated the idea of building one or two entirely new towns up here, with priority given to migrants for housing within them.

'Scotland is a very welcoming place ...' they say time and time again. No doubt true to an extent, however I suspect our welcoming nature would be tested if the numbers increased significantly and if new towns were built for migrants.

Having said that, this challenge ain't going away. Migration of people is only going to increase, so better solutions will need to be found in some shape or form.

That include your favorite football team winning the title.
