It's OK to kill journalists

United Nations experts have condemned the deadly attacks on journalists and media workers in Gaza, calling on Israel to allow journalists to enter the besieged territory and to ensure their protection. In a statement released on Thursday, the experts described the war on Gaza as the “most dangerous conflict for journalists in recent history”.

“We have received disturbing reports that, despite being clearly identifiable in jackets and helmets marked ‘press’ or travelling in well-marked press vehicles, journalists have come under attack, which would seem to indicate that the killings, injury, and detention are a deliberate strategy by Israeli forces to obstruct the media and silence critical reporting,” they said.

Israeli forces have killed Palestinian journalist Hassan Hamad in an air strike on his home in northern Gaza’s Jabalia refugee camp, days after the slain journalist said he was warned by an Israeli officer to stop filming in Gaza.

With the killing of the 19-year-old journalist, whose work appeared on Al Jazeera and other networks, the number of Palestinian journalists killed since the war began has risen to 175, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says at least 128 journalists and media workers are among the more than 41,000 people killed since Israel launched the devastating war on Gaza in October 2023.

“Hassan Hamad, the journalist who did not live past the age of 20, resisted for a full year in his own way. He resisted by staying away from his family so they wouldn’t be targeted. He resisted when he struggled to find an internet signal, sitting for an hour or two on the rooftop just to send the videos that reach you in seconds,” a post on Hamad’s X account posted by his colleague said. “At 6am (03:00 GMT), he called me to send his last video. After a call that didn’t last more than a few seconds, he said, ‘There they are, there they are, it’s done,’ and hung up.”

“Every time a journalist is killed, injured, arrested, or forced to go to exile, we lose fragments of the truth,” CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna said in a statement on Friday. “Those responsible for these casualties face dual trials: one under international law and another before history’s unforgiving gaze,” he added.

Israel will go to any lengths to try to stop the truth getting out.

They should read more of the New Testament.

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free”.

Would you also advise a Muslim to read the New Testament, or do you think they might be offended by that?

Do you think advising someone you knew to be a Muslim, to read the Christian holy bible might be a problem?

I am aware, as you are, that Jesus is considered a major figure in Islam.

There are different opinions about the source and translations of scripture versions used.

JohnD knows very well that it would be insulting to a Jew or a muslim to be encouraged to take guidance from a holy book that they didn't recognise as a holy book.

Not to mention that the new testament has specific paragraphs rejecting those who follow the old testament.

I don't think Christian scriptures advocate the murder of journalists.

Do you think they advocate the rejection of those who follow the Old Testament? Thus might it be insulting to suggest a jew (a follower of the Old Testament) takes guidance from the New?

Can you see how insulting someone on the basis of their religion is a problem in society?

For example telling Jews to read the New Testament. Something that rejects the beliefs of their religion. Not to mention that it widely blames them for Deicide according to some.

Motorbiking asks a question about Muslims and turns it into a rant about Jews.

Killing journalists is a policy of the state of Israel.

There is no need for motorbiking to pretend it is a requirement of Judaism.

I think the swerving is clear.

Advising Jews to read the New Testament is intended to insult people based on their religion. Playing dumb doesn't change that

obviously legitimate criticism of people based on their actions is fine. Unless you switch over to insults due to the religion.

Surely you wouldn't support mocking jews because they follow the Old Testament, not the new?

and you'd be happy to clarify that in a post.

I think we are clear that there are a few on here who like to rant about Jews..

But I'm not one of them.
