Turn the heating back on, wont make any difference, you can safely use the heating with the water turned off
That sounds like a permanent repair to me.For future reference as a temporary repair you may get away with a piece of rubber sheet cut to fit the pipe with a jubilee clip to hold it in place and fastened directly over the hole.
