Leccy Check points...

It still stands though; any electrician with any sense of pride in his work would flat-out refuse to terminate such circuits into a new CU. Even if the cable was still workable enough to terminate without causing insulation failure, the installation would be nearing end-of-life making the whole exercise rather futile.

I absoloutly agree with that. Remember this from a little while back?

All bar one of the outgoing circuits are VIR in unearthed conduit

To reconnect wiring that was not suitable for service would actually be illegal.

(EAWR, Regs 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 16 spring immediately to mind.)

As far as BASEC is concerned, rubber insulated cable is obsolete and should not be reused.

Rewire; it's knocking on fifty years old ffs.

define suitable for service..
if it passes the required tests then it's suitable regardless of if it's been labled as obsolete..

Thanks for all the responses guys,

Have found a couple of qualified guys who think should all be done by next week for a couple of large plus VAT, (and save me dicking about).

Thanks again

"if"

But testing is only part of the assessment process. I can put two bare conductors side by side and get an over-scale insulation resistance reading.

As the entire cable runs will not have been inspected, what about damaged, embrittled insulation in voids? Installations of that age have often been altered, possibly by incompetents. No testing will reveal open junction boxes, incorrectly made joints, etc. Some of the comments in the OP suggest a poorly maintained installations; evidence of which would lead experienced inspectors to suspect there may also be hidden problems.

If it's rubber cable, then it is unsuitable for continued service.

Rewire.

In response to the original post, you can do it all yourself as long as you submit a building notice and pay the fee for inspection.

<runs and hides>
