There are a lot of charitable people out there, the recent tsunami has shown that. Loads of money was raised. A fraction of which could have solved (not helped, solved!) many of the problems in Africa. A lot of those people will now feel virtuous for the next 5 years because they donated a tenner, and won't bother donating to any other causes for a long time.
God, when did I turn so cynical?!
I have some sympathy with this - but smart donors will have picked charities that are seriously committed to this particular incident but have a more general remit. Means you have to trust someone, but hey if you are going to be a charitable donor that's what you have to do anyway. You do your own research and take your pick.
Oh yes, and anyone on average income who's conscience let them off with a tenner - doesn't have one.

I think between one "event" and another, I probably gave about £80-£100 to the tsunami fund. If I'd known that the same donation (per head) could have solved the HIV problem in Africa, I'd have diverted what I gave and persuaded others to do the same. Sadly too late now, without a job at the moment I'm not in the position to donate any more.
