live to work or work to live?

ive had various different jobs, which ive liked, but got out when they started to go downhill. I love what i do, but i know ill never be a millionaire. You can keep your high earning high pressure jobs. I get to see my little girl growing up and be at home every night to read her bedtime story and tuck her in. I did years of emergency calls 365 days a year. Money was good but you can shove it.

Im now trying to cut back to 4 days a week, leaving the lads on site, so i can free up my weekends from paperwork etc. So definitely work to live!

If I was single I would buy and live out of a big camper van. Houses, overheads from houses and posessions for houses - that's what does it.

In Thoreau's book "Walden" he makes the point about how long we work to pay back our houses (and he wrote this in 1800's). He compares it with the indians and their teepees - a young man created his first teepee within a week or so as a teenager and that was it - done and dusted.

Another interesting book I just read is Affluenza: about how we earn more, want more and just get unhappier and unhappier.

I have done factory work, and yes it is very boring and repetative, but i've also worked with some fascinating people in these places. I still see some of the people now after our factory closed down. I currently still work for the same company as a service engineer (upvc products) and i love the job, but i'm on my own most of the time. the pay is terrible, but i get a fair amount of freedom, a van to use whenever i want and to be honest i probably do more than my fair share of work because i don't mind doing it. If i got another 3k a year i'd be happy but i can't see that happening anytime soon!

No you wouldn't, you'd probably just say "If only I had a bit more..."

Most people always feel they havent got quite enough

the work does get tougher on my body each year though.

thats what you employ people for noseall. You need to learn to step back a little. hard to do, but you dont get so knackered!
