Loft hatch problem

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help me.

I need to move my loft hatch and the only decent area I can move it to as this beam running across the joists (Red arrow pointing to it in the picture).

I'am guessing it's something best left alone but it doesn't hurt to ask in case someone knows for sure.

That beam is not a main structural element of the roof - it is there to prevent excessive deflection of the ceiling joists. You can remove it, but it would be wise to put a similar piece in as near as possible, allowing for the position of your hatch.
