I bought a business once which turned out to be heap of junk, I found out that the seller was a mason as was the valuer the agent and my bank manager. but of cause I was inevitably responceable.

Very sorry to read that richard, how did you find out? Fraud is still fraud isn't it, unfortunately it may well be buyer beware, but they can't tell you lies just because they are in a particular organisation. Were any of them members of any professional bodies? If it was a limited company and the problems were the accounts you may be able to get these from companies house.

Personally (I know it isn't always easy) I would prefer to start a business from scratch, no all goodwill is good, when you start from scratch you don't have that problem.

Sad though, hope it didn't cost you to much.

I think the point being made is that the masons look after their own, and this is why it is so important that a person in a position of power whether judge, politician, policeman etc should have to declare their association with them and of course this is starting to happen so therefore their must be some truth in it for that to be so.
When you say that they are not allowed to lie i think that is being naive for example you are not allowed to give someone a bad reference to give to another employer but what stops them phoning them? in other words how do you prove otherwise?

Your wrong kendor.

If a mason copper stopped a mason for a minor traffic problem, he may well turn a blind eye. If a mason copper was approached by the same mason to commit a robbery, he would tell him to s*d off. They may help each other in many ways, but not in illegal ways prior to the event.

I would of thought most of it is favourtism rather than criminal.

When I say you can't lie. i mean professional people like valuers and bank managers, not petty references.

Truth and the law does not always align as we might imagine it should.
Had a mate practicing as a lawyer, "Truth, black and white? No such thing mate, all shades of grey !"

Look at horse racing tipsters and their adverts, patently misleading but not lies in law.

Recieved among the usual loan offers, 3 month payment holiday from sign up !! 6.5% APR the actual APR was 6.54958 % don't you just expect it to be a greater figure rounded down for the advert ... the interest accrued over the 3months prior to repayments starting is added to the loan, in the example given £323 added, so one would have accepted to take the loan on in three months time for an extra £323 ... thanks a bundle for that !! Rip off Britain at its finest. To me it is misleading, in the eyes of the law perfectly fair.

It was a Tenant farm for which you need to show no accounts and it took a couple of years to show the rot, we was very poor for a few years after but probably brought us together as a family. anyways its water under the bridge we now have a thriving business only problem being the 40% tax bracket!.
