Match my new extension to next doors roof tiles

Hi guys and girls,


I have had a front lean to extension built and I am about to put up the wall plate etc and get some roof structure up.

I am trying to tie in to next doors roof so is there a rule of thumb to observe when matching across to make sure the tiles are the same height etc and the structures are the same height underneath? I am new to roofing so any advice is gratefully received.

For info roof is only about 6 tiles high by 18-20 wide, at 30degrees, single storey , front elevation.

Battons need to finish at the same height as your neighbour. Ideally use the same tiles as well. Lift one out and see what's written underneath.

If it's a front extension, then presumably you would have needed planning permission, and
the details should be on the plans.

The tops of their rafters are the rule.

You will ultimately line your rafter top up with theirs. We would mock-up a rafter complete with wall plate b/m and work from there. You can even slot in a little piece of 100mm x 75mm plate (into the b/m) in order for you to work out exactly where to finish the masonry coursing. Your rafter should butt up to the underside of their cloak overhang.

However, the simplest solution would be to ask if you can remove some of the neighbours tiles and match your wall plate up to their wall plate.

Be aware that your neighbours may not have finished with a full tile at the verge and make a note of what size tile batten they are using, before setting out your rafter spacings.

awesome cheers guys, the guy next door was very helpful and had left full tile edges and let me chip off the mortar to reveal the battens. Was pretty simple after that having faffed around for quite a while with the rafters!

My missus used this crazy thing called maths to work out all the exact angles and measurements ! Wizard lol
