I know a couple of you guys have Metrel MFT's.

Mine has started acting up when doing a loop test, either RCD or not.

When pressing the button, it appears the test has started, but then the screen goes blank and returns, or the unit reboots. Eventually, it'll do the test normally, so what gives?

It is the new style. And I've changed the batteries. And I've just had it calibrated by Metrel themselves.

How long have you had it. I'm was thinking of getting one of these. Would love to get a Megger top of the range but can't justify the cost just yet.

did you sort it out??

I've had Metrel meters all the time I've been PAYE- 6 years. The model I linked to is the latest.

They're OK, but personally (I don't know about RF) I find the zero'ing feature a pain. Whenever I need to zero for resistance measurements, I find it difficult to get to zero.

I think I've sorted it. I have tightened up the battery contacts in the battery compartment.

I had exactly the same thing with mine, although not identical symptoms. Sometimes the unit would power on, other times it wouldn't. Metrel diagnosed a faulty power button and repaired under warrantee, which was good considering that I wasn't the original purchaser, but the problem still persisted. I only discovered it by chance when I accidentally put pressure on the battery compartment cover and noticed that in doing so I could turn the unit on/off.

Yeah, I've had that on a metrel tester that belonged to the firm I worked for, and as has been said, it was the batteries.

I've got a metrel my self, and I really like it. It's a bit (lot) slow at loop testing on trip lock setting but apart form that it's a really good meter.

A lad I work with quite a bit has a fluke MFT, and I just can't seem to get on with it.

Simon, I've never really had any bother iwth zeroing. It usually says it's zero'd, and when you retest the leads it often reads 0.01Ω or 0.02Ω, but zeroing a second time cleared this.

I was getting some odd readings on continity this week, and tracked i donw to a broken wire where it connected to the banana plug. I soldered the plug back on and it's been fine since.

Latest is I thought I'd sorted it, but the problem returned today.

Guess I'll ring Steve Jackson (think that's his name) at Metrel in Yorks.
