But is there a risk that these are not genuine licences at this low cost?

No. But I do believe that they should be obliged not to write software which is so shtty that it is easily compromised.

I am not a MS fanboi, but, in time all software might be compromised. The more popular the software, the more likely it is that someone will try to hack it. For many years Apple was fortunate to dodge hacks through a principle called security through obscurity- why bother hacking an OS that hardly anyone uses? No operating system that has in internet access is "safe". Windows, MacOS, Linux, they are all hackable.

Bear in mind I'm talking about applications, which ought to be running only in the least privileged level.

I've been burned in the past by products claiming compatibility with MS Office document formats. The thing with compatibility is that there is no such thing as "mostly", or "almost", or "virtually 100%".

There is 100% compatibility with absolutely everything in all circumstances from the Big Bang until the heat death of the universe.

And there is incompatible.
