I was going to join a gym but my wife has now convinced me to buy a multi-gym. (Which I have) I get it Saturday.

I want to get a bit bulkier, any tips....lol

I'm expecting to look something like Arnold Schwarzenegger by the summer, I think that's pretty realistic.

Thoughts? :)

Firstly what age band do you fall into?

If you're over 40 then looking like Arnold is out of the window.

Whats your current weight? If you're within spec then no need to bulk if your overweight then you'll need to cut by eating less calories while maintaining a good amount of protein.

Bulk is mostly around low numbers of repetitions with heavier weights.

If you haven't done weight training before then you've got a good chance of doing it wrong without some guidance. Consider a personal trainer for a few sessions.

I think its easier to get motivated at the gym. However I'm sure you will do just fine as long as you don't over do it and build those guns slowly.

With a calorie surplus so you don't lose weight.

A lot of videos on YT explaining how. Start from a lower weight then increase as you get stronger.

This is true, but watching YouTube is not as good as having someone who knows what they're doing watching you.

I am over 40......Sylvester Stallone maybe? Lol.

Seriously I am slightly over weight but I'm quite big built, my arms are quite big naturally but not toned, I'd like to tidy them up a bit if possible.

If you are over 40 and assuming this isn’t a joke thread I’m afraid you won’t get very far with a home gym.

Diet is important and the risk of injury is very high.

Unless you bought a smiths machine I would send the multi gym back and join a gym.

You will need to train to fail and you can’t easily do that at home.

Decreasing reps as the weight goes up is usually the best way to go as is training the muscles back to back.

The first 6 weeks is just about getting used to it.

Make sure you warm up and stretch properly after.

Alternatively you can do body weight or weighted bodyweight Exercises.

Your other option is synthol (joke)

The key to arms is triceps. Not biceps. But it’s very easy to damage tendons

Thanks, its only a second hand cheap one so I'll see how it goes, I'm serious but obviously joking about the Schwarzenegger/Stallone aim :)

What model?

It’s really important to build up slowly, so easy to cause damage and if you don’t stretch after you will lose range.

Day 1 back shoulders and biceps
Day 2 chest and triceps
Day 3 legs bum and tum.
Rest day
Repeat.
That way each muscle group gets max recovery. Avoid doing everything in one go.

No more than 4 sets of each exercise and start with a warmup of 10-12 reps. Then reduce each set by 2 reps as the weight goes up.

Personally I would have gone with a bench and rack with Olympic free weights. Free weights give better results as it’s harder to cheat.

But what you have will get you started.

Might need some dumbbells

I'll give that a go thanks.

4 sets of 10?
