Multi gym

I'm not going to go mad.
You can also do pushups and pullups (assisted ones Google it if you don't know) at first as a beginner.

You'll be surprised how sore you will be the next day after you do around 50 pushups in a day.

Good luck though. Make sure you don't get too big. ;)

Get some dumbells

Do lots of walking as cardio

Eat sensibly

People pumping weights down the gym are usually deluded fantasists or self obsessed

Thanks, I'm on my feet all day so do a lot of walking anyway, but yes I could do a bit more.

I am gonna go with with a different angle here...

Ditch the multi gym, I recommend some dumbbells, but mostly barbell exercises. Get Mark Rippetoe's starting strength and go from there. 5x5s is a good way to start building work capacity. You can still build muscle, but even more importantly strength training (functional compound exercises) will also improve your bone density and make you a more stable robust person at later stages of life!

I am +40, been in the gym since age 16, but been exclusively powerlifting for the last 10 years. You don't need to overdo it, but I think it's great for longevity and building a solid foundation on your frame. Whatever you choose to do, in my opinion consistency is the key and consistency can only work if you enjoy the exercises you perform.

This I also fully support. Cardio doesn't have to be running on a treadmill (bad for knees anyway). Swimming, cycling are great. I personally do incline walks on a treadmill, moderate speed but 15% incline. 15-20mins each session.

I'll give that a go thanks.

4 sets of 10?
No. So on the peck deck for example.

You do 10-12 on a light weight to warm up.

Then set 1 10 reps. Say 40kg
Set 2 8 reps 50kg
Set 3 6 reps 60kg

The last set should feel hard.

5x5 are also very effective.
5 sets of 5 reps same weight. But training at the right weight to get to fail. (After you 6 weeks ease in ).

I am over 40......Sylvester Stallone maybe? Lol.

Seriously I am slightly over weight but I'm quite big built, my arms are quite big naturally but not toned, I'd like to tidy them up a bit if possible.
More like Humpty Dumpty. Big built my botty, lets be honest, yer fat and we both know it!

I hope Mrs Pete has put a few quid on the insurance 'cos you're gonna get a heart attack at your age.

I'd rather try and tidy up London Docks :LOL:

Take it easy matey :p:D

(You knew I'd bite didn't you)

And of course. If you feel light headed, excessively sweaty, dizzy… stop.

If you’ve been unfit all your life taking up exercise after 40 is a good way to trigger a heart attack.

All the sh*t in your arteries breaks off with exercise and goes where you don’t want it.

Measure HRR rate too. The time it takes your heart to recover. If you can’t drop 20 bpm after stopping, then you might have a problem.

I was going to join a gym but my wife has now convinced me to buy a multi-gym. (Which I have) I get it Saturday.

I want to get a bit bulkier, any tips....lol

I'm expecting to look something like Arnold Schwarzenegger by the summer, I think that's pretty realistic.

Thoughts? :)
You do realise if @Highway Man reads this yer really gonna get some stick?

People that talk down others that train, are usually tiny little farts, who live on Internet forums picking arguments from the safety of their keyboard.
Do you still have that giff with those massive bum dumbbells?
