It might be a temperature sensor or a thermal cut out. It would help to know where you found it.

Attached to a transformer which was inside some outside lighting.

It wasn't attached to the new transformer though.

Impossible to tell. it could be a supressor of some sort.

You have the benefit of having the thing. Are there any letters or numbers on the case?

Yes looks more like a supressor. A thermal cut out would have a switch on it to restore power once cooler.

Not necessarily. Some are self resetting and others, once they have operated, are non-resettable.

On the underneath it says 090A 063

Maybe the top suggests it cuts out at 79F?

It seems to be something which is far too much for the OP to cope with.

I truly cannot fathom what kind of person would go to all the trouble of taking photographs, uploading them, posting here, when all they had to do was to search for the sequence of letters and numbers on the b****y thing.

Does he need a map to find his kitchen each morning?
