Mrs P is in the market for a new/newer car, something small and cheap to run.
So been doing the searches onlines as you do, to get an idea of prices.
The thing that has struck me is, the price advertised on some cars that is not attainable due to hire purchase conditions.
If I want to pay cash for a car that is advertised at certain price, but can not be bought at that price due to HP restrictions is that legal?
example:
car advertised price at £6000, condition are HP must be paid over a period time making the price in total now £8000. The car not be bought for £6000 as it is a HP purchase only!

Buy a 2nd hand private under a year old, no vat and save yourself a few quid...with a new one you lose about 15% as soon as you sign the paperwork ...what type of car are you after?

If I was requested to buy a car on HP just to get that deal I'd walk away - you can pay for a vehicle any way you want, but dealers often make as much on the credit deal than they do on the sale.
Check out the Micra K12 - good deals with the new model coming along.
If there isn't a trade in, then car supermarkets are good or brokers for a new vehicle, particularly.
John :)

it's for the Mrs, she looking at the 107's at the moment and also she like the corsa, something cheap to run.

We can pay cash, it's the point that we have seen car advertised at x amount of pounds but when it comes to looking at the terms of payment, you can only get them on HP and interest charge is made on the x amount.
So it is impossible to buy the car at the advertised price.
Check out the Micra K12 )
Will do.
Thanks you both for your input

I suspect, in the current economic situation, if you waived some cash under the nose of a salesman, they'd be hard pushed to reject your offers!
And you can always walk away, into another showroom until you find someone desperate enough to take your cash.

I always show my interest, then send in the missus, she's a much better bargainer than me, sometimes i have to walk out to avoid laughing or being embarrased.

If ever I've managed to get 20% off a price she's squeezed an extra 10% on top of that!

I think I'd give Trading Standards a ring and ask them. It doesn't sound right to me :D

the nissan micras are nice little cars for a woman to drive, wouldnt drive one myself though. Vw fox worth a look.

Wouldnt want a kia/daewoo/hyundai/ etc

Thanks for the advise on car makes/models.
She has now set her sights on the 107 after a day of showrooms and test drives.

Like I said, don't you know anyone who can drive a hard bargain.
Go with them, show your interest/association, then leave 'em to what they do best. Walk away and let them drive a hard bargain. It might be worth a decent 'bung' at the end of the day.

When you start bargainning the salesmen know they're onto a real sale. But never be afraid of a walk away. You can always go back tomorrow and take their best offer.

I would have a japanese or korean car over a french car any day. Hyundai i10 is huge value for money, leccy windows and air con as standard too. 5 year unlimited milage warranty. Kia do 7 year warranty.

Do you know the bloke that does the ad with Nigel Mansel?
I'd pull his pants down and slap his arse, when it comes to haggling!
A love a good barter.
But this thread wasn't really intended to go this way, it was more about the rip off advertised prices that you can not purchase at, due to HP terms only!
I did but a post up in general motors forum regarding dealing with dealers.
Thank's for all the advice, I will now get may haggling head on!
and do a bit of research on the going prices.

I see what you mean,as for being legal haven't a clue, but its a buyers market and if the deal does not look good you walk away and find one that suits.Perhaps the profit margins on cars are small and to bump the price and no doubt get a hefty commission on hp this is why its done.

It's not a deal that I intend taking up. Just search for price of motors and this sort of thing popped up, the price for the make and model/year looked great, then when you read the info you could not purchase without using HP. Which then added an extra £2k on the price, so in my mind if you can not possible purchase at the advertised price, something stinks!

I suspect that a good many get sucked into these deals that is why they continue.
then when you read the info you could not purchase without using HP
First rule when parting with hard earned money look at the small print and then look again. ;)
