new computer today

hi, I'm off to buy a new computer this afternoon and will be spending around £500 any suggestions? it will be shared by me, wife and 2 kids. No need for anything ' fancy' just want a good, robust machine that wont be getting sent back in 2 weeks.
Anything I should avoid?
