New RCD tripping. Some questions to help me identify source

Re the switch next to the water tank. It will probably be double pole. Have you tried just turning it off, and check if that fixes the problem?

I once had an oldish DP switch for an immersion heater tripping the RCD at switching from on to off but never a problem with switching from off to on, did all the metered tests and showed as OK. Replaced that switch and the problem disappeared so I concluded my assumption was probably correct - I had suspected it might have been a sluggish break time on the N pole and a possibility of dampish debris in the switch mechanism, although stripping it down the contacts were not particularly mucky though but it had lasted quite a few years, say 20 or more.

Earlier today I had a customer from OCTOBER 2019 on the phone with a tripping issue - I tried to help them remotely BUT I do know they also had kitchen fitters in after me.

After 5 years its not really my problem

what is limiting it after 5 years as not your problem?
Customers can still claim against your goods supplied/work done after 6 years (England and Wales) claims are not limited by any guarantees/warranties you give for lesser periods of time.
Manufacturers guarantees of goods you supply (example 10 years by some) must be passed on to the customer.
For any job you do you are liable the next day, next week, next few years for what you have done in supply and/or installation of such.
You are still liable for your actions and omissions for longer than many realise.
Off course, if someone else alters things after your visit then it might or might not alter that.
It can sometimes be a minefield for the tradesman as well as for the customer.

We have all heard of Builders from hell, landlords from hell etc etc etc but there are some customers from hell too, we do not usually hear about those but they do exist.
I formed an opinion many years ago, in my personal experience, most customers say approx 90% of customers are reasonable enough if you are reasonable with them. of the remaining 10% then some of them you could fob off with any old tatt if you wished too and equally some of them would not be happy no matter what you did.
Similar experiences are probably similar to all businesses. to all customers in all walks of life, in all ranges, broadly speaking.

Being a business can be a good experience whether as a sole trader, limited company etc etc but not always all good every time in every way in similar ways to being a customer too.

For anyone interested, issue seems to be from a built in wine cooler the previous owners left behind. I had already switched this off at socket previously (purely money saving). It seems that when the cooker was switched in we were getting almost instant RCD trips when using other appliances, when it was switched off at socket (but still plugged in) there was a smallish time delay where it would run for between a few seconds to a minute before tripping RCD

Well if you are a sole trader and now retired you could still be held liable for your actions and omissions of past jobs anyway.

Who cares?

I've upheld the best standards over all the years and almost never get call backs .

Ebee now comments - Confused? Is it logical? Is it ethical? Is it professional?
