Hi all,

Looking for a tool to

1) cut away the bottom of the architrave/door frames to enable me to slot laminate slats underneath,

2) and also to hopefully do some "ad-hoc" cutting of the laminate slats themselves to adjust to the doorways etc around the room.

Complete newbie at this so please go easy!

I've seen a cordless (like the sound of that for portability) "Silverstorm" at Toolstation, and a corded "Mac Allister" from B&Q, just wondered if either were suitable. Both cheapies I know but I've not a lot to spend

I've got a Macalister one (before they tarted it up) and it's really good. I got 'on special'. You need to get blades of the ebay though. Saxton blades are very good. I find the coarse blade to be the best.

cheers joe, did you use yours for the application I am talking about? Or something else?

I forgot to mention I wouldn't mind being able to get metal blades for it, so I can cut through those carpet strip things with it too, is that true?

I use it for loads of stuff. Property renovation is my day job so I use it all the time. It's particularly useful for undercutting architrave like you are wanting to do.

If this is only a one of job, then an undercut saw (google from £3) is adequate for the door architraves and a jig saw will be fine for the laminate cuts.

I bought a multi-tool to do my laminate floor and it's been worth its weight in gold. As well as cutting the door frame I had to undercut a 10ft long fitted unit to slot the laminate underneath. Never done anything like it before and was jittery about doing it but with the multi-tool it was a walk in the park. Mine's a Bosch which was ridiculously cheap when B&Q were selling off stuff but I imagine they're all pretty much the same. I got circular & straight blades off Ebay and I've used the multi-tool for so many different jobs I'm surprised I haven't worn it out. I'm not a diy fanatic - just a little old lady with a house that needs updating and very little spare cash so needs must. I did all the laminate cuts with a jig saw as it's quicker but I invested in some blades that cut on the down stroke so I didn't have to flip the laminate over then find I'd done any cut-outs on the wrong edge of the plank - yes I really am daft enough to do that! Hope this helps.
