NHS Contact Tracing App

More garbage in the news. It just records that a phone has been near another. No central database. It uses reduced power blue tooth. to message nearby phones.

Ok so some one says I've got it. Info a bit mixed. Might just inform all phones that have been near that some one thinks they have it. Going on testing a fair proportion wont = chaos. Alternative person that thinks they have it gets tested - positive, send a message to other phones that have been near. Ideally test those too as some will have it and no symptoms or may have been near other phones.

Main problem really is getting a fast test turn round time.

No one is tracked at all. I assume they would want a name and NHS number when some one is tested. Obviously terrible and applies to anyone that has anything "medical" done irrespective.

Google and Apple. Well for one Germany is doing their own. They wont be the only ones. So more bullsh#t. Phones can't be tracked - total bullsh#t, they are. In fact on google it isn't easy to turn it off. Apple probably the same but irrespective of this they can be tracked anyway and are.

It would be better if all used the same but do many really expect to travel to other countries soon? Could also be that freedom to travel anywhere in the country will remain locked down for some time.

One country uses just mast derived tracking but they do have 100% coverage. Being such a wonderful country we have black holes and many shades of grey. :) Corbyn would cover the entire country in masts. Commercial lots don't care - they just want a sufficient number of people to use it to keep margins up Same with fibre. Even DAB has holes.

Even the Daily Fail is concerned.

NHS Covid contact-tracing app could be ILLEGAL and will cause chaos for Brits' foreign travel because it's incompatible with Apple-Google system

"The software will be tested on the Isle of Wight from this morning onwards - but there are growing concerns about its privacy settings and why the Government shunned a Google-Apple alternative adopted by other countries...

Question marks have been raised after other nations, such as Germany, the Republic of Ireland and Switzerland have chosen to implement a decentralised system - where the data always remains on a person's phone.

Their model, seen as more secure and immune from hacking by some experts due to spreading the collected information, is also backed by tech giants Apple and Google.

The UK has instead developed its own centralised app with data sent to the Government's servers when someone registers coronavirus symptoms, allowing the NHS to send them a test in the post.

Critics have argued that by not using the same app or framework as the Europeans the two systems are not compatible, meaning Brits travelling to those countries could be unnecessarily placed in quarantine for 14 days upon arrival once the lockdown is eased."

Isolationalist ideology over the common good.

Rumour has it that Boris still backs Betamax!
Lal top dislikes....Boris.Tories.Police.Most things British...Oh look...surprise..he thinks it is not a good idea.

If some one goes to Korea they wont be allowed entry unless they download their app. Also find themselves in lock down for 2 weeks wearing a tracking bracelet. They have had problems with people taking no notice.

Google and Apple are being stupid and totally misleading.

Forgot to mention that the airlines are up in arms about 14days isolation when some one arrives in another country for obvious reasons. Aer Lingus flew a plane full into london today. Another larger operator mentioned that social distancing is impossible on a plain due to air circulation and re use. There were no checks at all on this plane load - fully packed with people.

"Despite what the NCSC has continued to imply, the app will not, as it stands, work all the time on iOS nor Android since version 8. The operating systems won't allow the tracing application to broadcast its ID via Bluetooth to surrounding devices when it's running in the background and not in active use. Apple's iOS forbids it, and newer Google Android versions limit it to a few minutes after the app falls into the background.

"That means that unless people have the NHS app running in the foreground and their phones awake most of the time, the fundamental principle underpinning the entire system – that phones detect each other – won't work."

Once again, British government manages to waste UK tax money while trying to develop some IT software, that other countries have already developed.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it, how stupid do you need to be to work for the Tory party.

More garbage in the news. It just records that a phone has been near another. No central database.
"There are broadly two types of coronavirus contact-tracing apps; those that are centralised and those that are decentralised. The first takes data from people's phones and saves it on a central system where experts are trusted to make the best possible use of the data, including providing advice to people as and when necessary.

The second, decentralised approach, as set out by Apple and Google, puts users in more control of their information, and alerts them automatically with no intervention from a third party. Apple and Google have also banned apps that use their decentralised and anonymised API from accessing location services to track and identify people, despite pressure to do so. And they have said they will only allow one app per country, or state in the US.

Both types use Bluetooth to detect other nearby phones also running the software. Thus, when someone catches the coronavirus, people can be warned if their phone was within 6ft of that patient's phone for more than a few minutes.

The UK finds itself almost alone with a centralised virus contact-tracing app that probably won't work well, asks for your location, and may be illegal"

So you believe what you want to believe

You are totally wrong mate on how the system works and its efficacy.

The app as described will do an ok job on public transport and might manage at supermarkets. It'll be useless anywhere people aren't checking their phones a lot.

The privacy and security concerns around the app aren't negligible. It isn't as well designed as the Google/Apple approach in terms of making it harder to de-anonamise.

Apparently its by the same crew who were behind Cambridge Analytica, which is another point against trusting it.

How do the Google/Apple apps know if you've been in close proximity to someone who alerts as infected?

Essentially it's the same process, but it works peer to peer rather than a central server. One of the, several, differences is that it refreshes the random IDs daily which makes misuse of the system much harder.

Because it's done by the makers of the OS it can also work more effectively in the background. The government version is quite restricted by standard controls and battery saving tools in Android and iOS.

ok, so how do they get around this part ?

Is because they own the OS's respectively?

Ours does now seem to have switched back to a central database but it doesn't track position. If it's doing that they would be better off using mast position sensing. It's simpler and the phone just needs to be on. I've not heard of anyone in the UK getting hold of their tracking info from their provider but some one in Germany definitely has. Interesting things happen when google maps is installed anyway.

How well it works where it has - when mast location is used they will know the phone has been near another even if the app isn't installed. The behaviourists reckon that used on it's own without social distancing would bring the R value down to 1.4 = about 1/2 what it is with nothing being done. 1.4 is too high so no good on it's own.

;) So if I install it I probably finish up needing web access when the phone is on. Something I don't generally do when out and am unlikely to do as pay as you go is my best option or free local access where it's available.

Korea has already found that relying purely on people isn't a good idea. Also had a problem when the population thought it was over.

They had it totally under control and then had an outbreak in dormitories for migrant workers but also clamped that one down swiftly.

Yeah, pretty much.

Some apps are trusted enough to run continually in the background. Most aren't.
