If you turn stat on, but heating not on and there's green light on, give receiver a little tap, may be a sticky relay. If it work after a tap, SCR is faulty.

Thanks for the tip but unfortunately this does not work; I have tried it several times.
I have, once again, been trying to get the heating to work for hours now and it just won't fire up the boiler. The green light on the SCR is on most of the time and the red light flashes occasionally to receive the signal but nothing happens. Sometimes the red light is on but not flashing at all. Thank you for your tip which sounds good but not on my SCR unfortunately.
Isolate boiler electrics, follow cable into the boiler. You will have a L N E, then another two wires (possibly grey and black). Take these two out and put a short piece of wire between these two terminals. Then use the boiler controls. If this works then you know its the external controls at fault.
Thanks for this. It's not something I think I could do, it sounds a bit too technical for me, so will ask my dad to give it a try when he next visits in a couple of days.
