This is the correct way to do it when architraves are skinnier than skirting.If the skirting protrudes from the architrave, it can be tidied up with a small mitre cut - I much prefer this...

The second pic, they clearly intend to box that pipe-work in. The laminate has been held back as well as the skirting.A couple of lengths cut short too.
