Not sure I like how this skirting meets the architrave - opinions

Has anyone seen skirting laid this way before? Not my DIY. Was the builders carpenter son, but I may have to fix it DIY.

It's a feature to be sure but like you, not sure that I like it. Amongst other things, you're left with that big join running diagonally which needs filling and sanding.

Yeah, I think it looks crap TBH, but I'm trying to be objective as maybe it's just me and I've never seen anything like this before?

It is done like that because your architrave is smaller in depth than the skirt otherwise you will just have a cut off end showing. It could of been done with the join being disguised by the profile

I suspect that he was shown how to do it at college and is relishing the opportunity at being able to try it out.

this looks to me like they have attempted to do it correctly via scribing and not mitring so its actualy the one on the left that is too short, internal corners are best done with one cut square and the other scribed

Thanks. I’m learning too. I think it’s something that I’ll sleep on and decide if it will drive me nuts or not. A fair bit of effort to change and I really don’t fancy the builder sending his son back round.

As you will be painting it then that big diagonal at the architraves can be sanded and filled but I do think what they were trying to acheive was the right way. Or a shallow bevel from the architrave away may of worked or better yet new architrave in a tourus profile to match the depth of the skirting with then no need for the fancy bit.

If the skirting protrudes from the architrave, it can be tidied up with a small mitre cut - I much prefer this...

This is the correct way to do it when architraves are skinnier than skirting.

The second pic, they clearly intend to box that pipe-work in. The laminate has been held back as well as the skirting.
The first pic, yes the skirting is slightly short in the corner but, assuming you are going to be painting it then all the gaps can be caulked and you won't even see it. A different matter of course had it been exposed oak etc.

Having trades-persons in the house is always stressful. Decisions to be made, everything costs more than you expect, nothing's ever 'quite'as you'd intended, usually due to misunderstandings rather than error plus of course, the 'invasion' of people in your home, you just want them out.
I'm pretty sure that given a couple of days after they've left, you'll be super happy with everything.

Just have a chat. Give them a cuppa and a biscuit. It'll be fine.

Actually, I’m boxing the pipework in, but not that far out. I found a discarded length of skirting out front that will allow me to sort that at a later date. You’re right, I just think that communication is important when you get to some of these interior decisions. And also common sense by looking at what the rest of the house looks like.

Totally correct, we’ve had a period of calm after a lot of building work and having people come back, move the white goods around again, and have music blaring and noise, simply isn’t fun.
