An italian pro cyclist died in his sleep recently.

Only in his early 20s.

IIRC, cyclists on EPO had to set alarms to wake them through the night as their lowered heartrate while sleeping (combined with thickened blood from the EPO) made cardiac arrest more likely.
 
Why not just ban these drugs? Whats wrong with coming first even if its slower than the last race?

However, a sizeable contingent of commentators, industry insiders, and even ex-pros say that testing is done not to ensure that all cheats are caught, but that a chosen few are caught.

I can see how even a pro cyclist might have a technical diagnosis of asthma, and get the steroids inhalers provide, but the ones I know ( the asthmatics) would certainly collapse well short of the tour de France finish
