Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Just looking at your original photo on page 1 - there does seem to be a leak at the bottom of the baffle door. As the fumes seem to have gone, I reckon you have got it right.

Turn the boiler off until you can get a trusted Oil tech to confirm that this application is not leaking POC into your home.

The only thing oftec registered proves is that they have parted with a decent sized wedge of cash to be deemed a "Registered Technician"

So far it has cost me 175 quid and I seem to have potentially solved the problem myself in 10 minutes due to advice from here.
I am just hoping for success with the third attempt at getting someone who knows what they are up to.

I shall have to wait and see.

This POC that has been mentioned- is that fumes?

I have new a carbon monoxide alarm in the utility room and it seems perfectly happy so I am not overly concerned at the moment.

POC's - Products of Combustion......fumes to you and me!
Certainly there has been a problem with your baffle door but whether it is recent or historic we don't know.
Certainly you are on the right track I think.....behind that door are the flue ways that you can see - and they need to be clear and vacuumed out.

The first monkey I had around cleaned out the combustion chamber/flue ways , changed a nozzle and left me with a leak of POC AND CHARGED Me 65 quid !!

I completely understand Andy and where he is coming from but there are far less fumes escaping now than there was before I touched it. It is not completely gone (I think) but it will be properly sorted once I get the new insulation board and get the (3rd) service guy to install it and test for POC When he is done.

One other question, should there be a seal ring of some kind where the blast tube goes into the combustion chamber ? It is just metal on metal at the moment.

Just wondering what the normal thickness is for ceraboard used on a firebird boiler. The stuff on it is 20mm but the local merchants said the firebirds use 10mm ceraboard.

Should I double it up to make 20mm or just use one layer at 10mm??

Your merchant is selling you a piece cut from a larger sheet. If he won't get you the genuine Firebird part, which is different to ceraboard, then I suggest you contact Firebird for their help, or recommendation for a local stockist. If you have the 18mm rope, I personally would trim your existing panel and fill in with the rope.

The only seal on a riello r40burner is an o ring round the yolk of the blast tube the rest is face to face on the firebox flange.many thanks for the vote of confidence JOHN.much appreciated.

HalT stop whoa I've boobed there isn't an o ring on the yolk of the r40 burner,it's on the RDB burner.

Just thought I'd tell everyone I've just had my OFTEC inspection today and the inspector said he was
very pleased.He took photos of an oil tank and supply I'd put in andsaid he's going to use it in some
tutorials he does,I think the supplementary earthing I'd put on impressed him,so I'm really chuffed
it must be the 50years of experience that's paid off.

Ok so I took off the baffle door and was going to cut a channel and sit the the rope seal into it but the old worn insulation/gasket fell apart and is of no use now.

Obviously I need to get the acc000gsk from a supplier asap but in the mean time would some ceraboard suffice? Or it it inferior to the material used in the OE gasket?

Could I use the ceraboard and set the glass rope into it as I had intended to do with the old gasket?

Any advice is welcomed and appreciated.

Fair enough- just wanted to if it was a viable option.

Will have to see how quick I can get one in Northern Ireland.
Next day delivery doesn't seem to be offered by the big boys.
Maybe I'll manage to get one from somewhere over here.

I have actually had enough of this indoor boiler hassle and I am going to get a new condensing boiler stuck outside so that I don't have to worry about fumes again.

Hopefully the installer will know his onions like the boff!
