Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Just an update on my situation.i bought a baffle gasket panel direct from firebird (£41 inc fast post) but it was no better than the ceram board and still left me with the fumey smell. 2 local plumbers/engineers who reguarly buy from the merchants that I work at recommended I buy and use 'fire blanket' from the local plumbing merchants instead. It comes in 2ft wide and is sold by the ft and cost me £3.10 for 2 sqft. It is 20mmthick but is easily compressed. I was advised to double it up and it has done the job perfectly. Since fitting the fumey smell has gone and the boiler is no longer randomly cutting out. I'm having one of the engineers check out the boiler/set up for me next Saturday and I will then know if a new boiler is the way to go or not.
No idea why it has stopped the cutting out though... any ideas from the experts?? Is internal pressure necessary with an oil boiler??

Its probably got a little back pressure which is giving the flame a little more stability,because its
Not loosing the gases out of the door.Bob

I was imagining a Diesel engine losing compression when I asked the question about it cutting out so your answer goes with that a bit...

Would a combustion chamber leak cause intermittent flame/firing failures?

Can I make a suggestion....?
Now that you have the baffle door fume tight, get the burner oil pump pressure checked, and a flue gas analysis taken? If everything is now clean in there, this would be the final step.

Cheers John I will ask the tech to check pump pressure when he is here.
I am sourcing 2 guys for pricing a replacement and 2 others to advise on how to save the firebird so shall see how that goes...

Apologies, where I live there are plumbers who do installation and engineers who do repairs. So I'm just trying to be fully aware of what the options are.

From what I can see and have read, there's absolutely no need to replace the Firebird....you've done the donkey work anyway!
Any oil bod with any degree of ability could set up your burner so it would burn clean for years......all parts are available.

The locals who advised me- for free, said they do not and would not use anything else!
