Then leave out the RIP stick. If we have these issues of dead gaming machines with rings of death, do you not think oxidization is an issue along with thermal issues.
Those are mostly due to poor cooling and cheap manufacturing. Not exactly closely related to HDDs.
Would electronics not take a bigger knock outdoors?
Takes a while. An HDD would be pretty screwed after a year, I admit. After two weeks.. I'd not be surprised if it works if properly dried out.
