Thanks to everyone for keeping it "clean" (ish), non racist nor homophobic.

:

Why is it considered okay to call those with learning difficulties but not those that choose a homosexual lifestyle or those that are born in a different country? You've been brainwashed matey-boy.

Never said it was - this thread is about how language evolves and what was once considered a vaguely "acceptable" term of insult is no longer the case and has become unfashionable.

Terms such as "nig nog", "golliwog", "pa*i", "paddy", "wop", "dago" as well as "chuffer", "queen", "poofta", "a*se bandit", "sh*t stabber" etc, as interesting as they are are not within the scope of what I had intended this thread to be concerned with.

Terms such as "bounder", "cad", "rotter" are, to my knowledge, not related to learning difficulties and I had hoped that more of these would emerge over time.

So, joe, as much as I know where you're coming from on this one, your preconceptions are in error.

How about '****' for Down's syndrome? Didn't see you jumping about over that or 'spaz' etc. Like I said - you've been brainwashed into accepting the unacceptable. People with Down's don't have a choice yet you mock them - but you are upset by things like Nig-nog even though Love they Neighbour said it all the time. Shame on you and your ilk.

Well to be fair What about Spastic (the kids with leg irons and calipers of the fifties) up until not so long ago it was known as the Spastic society, my dad used to go around selling their raffle tickets for them of an evening.

And in my youth my Grandad was always using Bxgger this , Bxgger that and you stupid bxgger, no one batted an eyelid.

Nare do well.
Scroat .
Ponce.

Can you remember any old insults that we used to use yesteryear, before PC (perhaps) or general disdain of the usage came into being and language evolved?

I mentioned "spazz" on another post, and wish to offer "Flid" as a other example (and yes, I know the origin of these words - the post is about what used to be considered vaguely "acceptable" before they became taboo).

Try to avoid the usual racist ones if you can please - although the stupid ones such "Abjab" are of some historical interest.

yes I noticed the spaz short for spastic, remember the kid in calipers?
flid, short for thaelidomide remember those little short arms?

I'm not jumping about over any of those being provided. Who's to say I mock any of those you allude to  Who's to say I'm upset by anything? You seem to be implying that you know what I'm thinking and what my boundaries are. Pity you're so far off the mark then!

As said previously, I'm curious about the use of language and how it has evolved. Nothing more, nothing less.

One from the seventies aimed at the speccy gormless kids with no friends .

Hang on its slipped my mind

OH YEAH it was Joe90

Then why are you so concerned about not using terms for those that elect to live a certain lifestyle such as shirtlifter or uphill gardener? Why are you mortified by those terms but not by ****? You've been brainwashed matey-boy.

I'm not concerned nor "mortified" in the slightest - I find it strange that you seem hellbent on believing that you know what does or doesn't offend me. You seem to have some axe to grind, and ironically have brainwashed yourself into thinking that I'm brainwashed.

Let me try to explain to you once again - I am curious about a particular area of language evolution. It's a bit like my having a preferred interest in mathematics ("pure" instead of "mechanics" or "statistics), the others do not offend nor mortify me, but do not particularly interest me in the context of what I may wish to consider and research. I do hope that you are able to comprehend this, since it's getting tiring trying to explain it to you, numbnut

Why say this then?

"Thanks to everyone for keeping it "clean" (ish), non racist nor homophobic." - but you can call anyone with Down's syndrome a **** etc
