Order Elec items for a 2 storey extn, + BS7671 imperfections

To Mod 14: Fair enough, and thanks. I didn't realise it would such be a hassle – with forums where I’ve had admin powers, it’s usually been possible to just chop off, or copy, part (of any size) of a thread and use it as new one, with a new title, without having to move individual messages.

As you may be aware, the technique you suggest of starting a new thread and then cross-linking each to the other is something I have done recently in relation to a number of threads which had drifted off topic – but I managed to do that fairly soon after the drift had started. I’m less convinced that this technique would be appropriate in this case, since 100+ posts of the ‘new topic’ will remain in the ‘old thread’, and quite probably not that many more posts to come. My main thoughts were in relation to people searching through topic titles in the future. The change you’ve made to the title is at least a good step in that direction . Thanks.

AFAICS, the OP was never seen again after the first post and none of the replies, certainly none beyond page 1, really represented anything approaching serious answers to the OP. That makes me wonder whether totally changing the title (to reflect what the virtually all of the 100+ posts related to) might be a better solution – given that the OP never got, and never will get, an answer?

Kind Regards, John

For the sake of repeating myself time and again.

Doesn't this thread just highlight how this DIY forum has lost sight of its aims and objectives and become an Experts Debating diy forum.

Many Diyers look to this forum for answers to questions that are simple to us but invariably very difficult to them.

I really feel that your habit of diverting (I wont use the hj word) the topic to issues perhaps even relevant to the subject matter is driving Diyers away from this forum. They get lost in the fog of debate, hell even I got lost in the fog of this debate.

Some of the off topic subjects would challenge many on the IET forum and in my view that is where they belong not here.

Why don't you suggest to the MODs that an expert debating forum be added to the forum list.

That may well be true in some cases, but I think that you've picked a very inappropriate thread to use as an example. I would suggest that the reason the OP never returned to this thread (and the reason (s)he diod not get an answer to the OP) can be seen by examining the first five responses (s)he received (incidentally including one from yourself) - as it happens actually before I started participating in the thread (extracts follow):
What are you actually asking ? You should speak to the electrician who will sign off your work
What are you actually asking ?
He's asking people here to fill in the yawning chasms in his knowledge which should not be there if he wants to do electrical design work.
We have in the ground floor .... There will be five circuits driven by separate MCBs ( Miniature Circuit Breakers). ... Is this ok?
Nuff said!
Hi, We are building an two storey extension.
When you applied for Building Regulations approval, what did you say would be the way you would ensure that the electrical work would comply with Part P? ...
How are you getting 40 spot lights past Building Control under Part L energy efficiency? ... How are you getting 40 spot lights on one 6 amp circuit when a 6 amp circuit can supply about 12 lights maximum ... How are you getting 40 spot lights on one circuit to comply with avoiding danger by splitting circuits so a fault on one circuit does not cause a risk? ...
I'm not saying that any of that was 'undeserved', and nor do I feel that the OP should have been given an answer other than 'get an electrocian' (which several of those intial posts did say) - but I think that the reason the OP never returned is pretty clear, and (for at least once) had nothing to do with me :)

Kind Regards, John

It would mean moving about 100 posts. Others may not agree, and if it went wrong the posts would all be lost.
Just move the first 7 or 8 then.

Simple(r)s.
