Well, you seem happy to 'waste your time' discussing the possible shortcomings of BS7671 on this forum, where you know your comments won't be considered in the next revision. Are you saying you consider the certainty of failure to be preferable to the possibility of success?
As I wrote recently, this (dramically off-topic!) discussion is fairly exceptional, in that as a fair bit of it has actually been about 'shortcomings' of BS7671 in general. The usual situation in which I 'waste my time' in discussions relating to such possible shortcomings is in the context of attempting to determine the answer to a specific question which relates to compliance with BS7671 - when issues about clarity/interpretation/whatever of BS7671 often arise.

As for your question, IMO one has to look at it from a 'personal' point-of-view. Even though it is obviously true that discussions in a forum (or pub, or wherever) have a 'certainty of failure' in terms of influencing future versions of BS7671, there is an intellectual (and educational) value (and some intellectual satisfaction) in having such interactive discussions - just as the case with discussions in forums/pubs about 'putting the world to rights' etc. in countless different fields. There is very little satisfaction of any sort to be had from submitting comments non-interactively into a 'black hole', which might perhaps be represened by a BSI 'waste bin'!

To be clear, if I were sure that my comments would be considered by the committee, and particularly if I were going to get some feedback, I definitely would be submitting comments/suggestions about BS7671. I think I am reassured, both by BS0 and what you have said, that this probably is the case during the public consultation process, I therefore probably will offer comments at that stage, but I am not yet really convinced that comments I submitted at other times would necessarily be given proper consideration. I suppose one course would be for me to try to get some reassurance from BSI about that - and I may well try that (but without holding my breath).

Kind Regards, John

Well, you might get some intellectual satisfaction from preparing your case for whatever you are going to propose to BSI; sometimes the process helps to focus the mind.
If you do "seek reassurance" from BSI, I'd be interested to hear their response. ;)

Indeed. I intended, but forgot, to mention that in my recent post. Particularly given my 'inappropriate background' and limited experience, 'wasting my time' in discussing possible issues about BS7671 in this forum is an excellent and valuable part of the process of 'preparing the case' and 'focussing my mind' in relation to what I will eventually propose to BSI. ... but, yes, I will obvioulsy be doing some preparatory work in advance of the appearance of the AMD 2 DPC (and hoping that changes in the draft don't invalidate too much of my preparation!).

You will be one of the first to hear! Do you have any suggestions as to 'which level' (or even which person/title) I should address my request to?

Thanks, but I don't really do stamps these days - do I take it that [email protected] would work equally well?
I suggest you use the Form Comments.doc from the IEC at http://www.iec.ch/standardsdev/resources/forms_templates/ with a covering letter.
I think there may have been a misunderstanding here. I was asking who I should approach to ask ('seek reassurance') about the acceptability of comments about a Standard made other than as part of a public consulatation process. The IEC form you indicate appears to be one for actually making the comments. Would: http://www.bsigroup.com/en-GB/forms/general-enquiry/ perhaps be more appropriate for my 'general enquiry'? ... or maybe just an e-mail to the customer services address?
Have fun!
Maybe - we'll see :) IME, dealing with organisations such as this can sometimes be anything but 'fun'!

John,

If you ask them a vague question about the admiisibility of comments, you'll get a vague answer. Hence I was suggesting that you prepare your comments using the IEC form, and submit them with your question. You won't be wasting your time, since you can use the same comments when repsonding to the consultation.

Oh, I see, I obviously misunderstood. Thanks. I presume that e-mail is as acceptable as snail-mail?

MODS: Nearly all of this lengthy thread is about the interesting and relevant topic of possible shortcomings in the Wiring Regs (BS7671) and ways in which we may be able to help to improve it, but the title of the thread gives no hint of that. I should have forced it into a new appropriately-titled topic early on, but the spin-off discussion had been going for too long before I had a chance to do that.

Would it perhaps be possible for you to split off most of this thread (probably all other than page 1) into a new topic, entitled something like "BS7671 - imperfections and ways of helping to improve "? Thanks.

Kind Regards, John
