Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

Bleed the pump Kev?? Again?? I didn't know we'd bled the pump - or am I being a bit dim?
Talking of the pump.....
When the system was first installed (seems like light years ago) our heating guy accidently left the frost stat, in the loft, set way too high and the pump ran continuously for about 12 hours or more before anyone realised.
Would this have done any long term damage to the pump?

undo the big silves screw in the middle of the pump (water may be hot) and let the air out put screw back and turn on :D

pedantic is right hw sec circ pumps run 24/7 no probs

Kev, ref that other post, if I went along to this gaff and made it all better, would the Amelia Rate be appropriate?

Hopefully the final update on this saga for those interested

We have never found a solution to this long standing problem but I have got used to living with the bleeding and topping up routine. No more dreadful noises thankfully but the pressure just creeps down over time. We had one incident a month ago when we mysteriously had no heat at all and a very strong smell of damp in the airing cupboard. No signs of water to be found anywhere but no pressure in the system!

I have one last question - regarding the rad in the hall. Since our heating engineer used a cleaning solution in the system (some months ago now) this particular rad, which is painted brilliant white, has turned a horrible shade of pink. I mean bright baby pink! I assume it is a chemical reaction but can I do anything about it? It's had 6 coats of white gloss and 3 coats of radiator enamel - still pink!!

Thanks to everyone who gave their suggestions during a frustrating time. Much appreciated. I remain mystified.................

You have the patience of a saint.

I have been following this thread since it started, my opinion is ....... have it all ripped out and fit a Valliant combi. ;)

I had a mysterious one similar to this recently, so try this as you have nothing to lose. Ask your plumber to take the head off the pump and if the residue inside is orange 'rusty' coloured then that is where it's dragging in air.
The case I had was on an open vented system but I have since heard of it on a pressurised system, it too was a bit of a saga and I also suspected and proved that old leaky rad valves were also a lesser part of the problem.
I only sussed it when I did a post mortem on the pump which had corroded so badly that the impeller had snapped off! The inlet had the usual black sludge marks and the rest was orange.
After that I would try the leak sealer as just suggested by ChrisR to cover any microleaks

PS just spotted bit about 'whining pump' which again points to that as being the cause of your problem

As BAHCO said you are very understanding, I'd have blown a fuse by now, had it all ripped out, and replaced. Wouldn't keep as much as a pipe clip. [/b]
