It may discolour, especially push fit, but why do you believe it needs protective paint?

Wall penetration should be mortared IMHO. Replace.

It's in the Regs now, idea is the full force of the discharge is available to clean the gulley, and avoids build up of detritus above the grid, which usually stinks to high heaven and eventually blocks up. (Having just sorted out the ex Mother in Laws, I can vouch for how unpleasant they can get.... That is being changed to a plastic grid and the pipe extended next time I'm over there!)
