See the UV damage that the original grey pipe got (in the OP).

That looks like more than UV damage to me. The new pipe shouldn't be affected like that but you can use a good quality gloss paint with the appropriate undercoat if you wish.
 
My 1950's didn't, but I changed them years ago because it seemed sensible. Is it a rule now?

It's in the Regs now, idea is the full force of the discharge is available to clean the gulley, and avoids build up of detritus above the grid, which usually stinks to high heaven and eventually blocks up. (Having just sorted out the ex Mother in Laws, I can vouch for how unpleasant they can get.... :sick: That is being changed to a plastic grid and the pipe extended next time I'm over there!)

Thanks, I just converted mine, because it seemed sensible. I still ought to do the utility sink + washer's drain - a job for the coming summer.
