I have a roughly 4.5 foot by 1.5 foot area of lath and plaster that fell off an edge of my ceiling. Can I patch it ?

It is not very strong but one length does meet/follow the wall, which should make it that bit more manageble.

Got any Y shaped cracked in ceiling? That's a bad sign.
Ceiling needs overboarding and skim.
Hire board lifter for a week and plasterboard over with 50mm drywall screws.
I don't recommend patching.

To patch brush some Sbr around edges and blob sone plaster around to firm up before more falls.
Cut plasterboard to fit and fix
Bonding and skim.
I wouldn't though.

Although you can do this.
