The thermostat has been disconnected. Is that what you mean? I've linked TL and TR as you have in yours.

I meant the nest thermostat; is it linked to the wiring box and configured for the boiler type?

Set it up as 'other boiler' and see how you get on

Your boiler has integral water storage, so as has been said it isn't a combi. If it is set it to combi the hot water control is disabled. I'm not sure how Nest does this but I wouldn't expect it to do it by switching it permanently 'on' but you never know.

If you still have the problem after changing it from combi, is there anything else we should know about? for example, did anything go wrong during the installation? did any fuses blow at any point?

Have wired it up as you have but the burner is still coming on constantly

I assume when you say this, you mean that the Nest Thermostat is set for heating 'off' and hot water 'off' but the boiler still runs. Is this correct? When this happens, do the radiators or hot water heat up?

There is a simple test you can try to find out if the problem is at the boiler end, or at the Nest. Remove the wires from CHL and HWL and see what happens now? If the boiler doesn't fire, it's the Nest that is at fault, if it still does fire up, then it's something at the boiler end.

Hi guys,

just found this post hope it's still relevant. Lots of great advice on here.

I am about to buy a house that's fitted with the Potterton Powermax HE (dunno what size but cant see that it matters). For some reason there is no room thermostat anywhere in the house that will control the temp of the radiators! strange but hey ho.

I contacted Potterton who told to me that the boiler cannot take an external thermostat, but i found this site that contradicts that.

Question - I see that you guys were, a few years ago, discussing how to fit the Nest to the boiler and its all working etc. thats great for me as i will now be able to control the temp around the house with that instead of turning up/down each individual radiator. I see in the pics that there is a nest wiring control box thing in or near the boiler. I have been on the google site where they sell the nest and in the contents there is not a wiring box. do i have to buy this box seperately or what?

any help would be great....

Should have started your own thread in all honesty.

But the white box you refer to is the HeatLink and comes with the Nest 3rd Generation, it is not available as an official spare.

Please check you have bought the right product and have not bought the US Nest (This is not compatible and has no HeatLink).

I havent bought anything yet im just enquiring as i want to buy the nest. So how do i get hold of the heatlink box. is it as simple as going on amazon?

You just buy a 3rd Generation Nest Thermostat....

Before you buy, make sure you actually check the exact model installed. Not all installs are straight forward

when you say the exact model installed, do you mean the boiler or the nest?

I have the Potterton Powermax HE - dunno what size as it doesnt say on the unit and i dont have the manual.

Hi team,

well i have bought my home, got my keys yesterday (04 Oct). I went straight out and bought the Nest V3 learning thermometer.

I came back to this forum to have a look at a few wiring pics to assist me in connecting the heat sink to the boiler, but something is confusing me......

I see pics of peoples wiring into the heat sink but where do i get these wires from? do i have to go out and buy a separate cable with sufficient wires running through it and then attach each cable to the junction box on my boiler to the heat sink??? nobody has mentioned this in any of their diagrams/explanations/pictures.

If this is the case, is there a certain cable to buy to handle voltage etc and how many wires should be going through it??

or do i just replace the thermostat with the existing old one and expect it to work?

please help.

Yes, you need to provide your own cable. You need some five core 0.75mm for the 230v side and two core 0.75mm to power the Nest control unit from the Heat Link. What controls are in place at the moment?

Thank you. Controlling the temp at the moment is a Drayton Combi-Stat. I have had a look at the cables coming out of the wall and there is the Live, Neutral and Earth. Also is another brown sleeved one? That cable is going to the 3 socket, if you understand that. There are only 2 sockets on the hive thermostat so I will assume I only connect the earth and live.
